Tell us about yourself: My name is Elizabeth. I'm a bit shy, so please be gentle. My son, Brandon, was adopted when I was just five years old. He was my best friend and baby. He passed in 1998. It took me seven years to even fathom the idea of adopting again. We adopted my second son, Theodore Bear, in 2005. He was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis in 2012. We couldn't afford to continue to see a fertility specialist after that, but we didn't care. He was all that mattered. So, when I say he is my son, I truly mean it. He responded well to treatment until this past February. He suddenly went into complete liver failure. He was only 8 1/2 years young. I swore that I would never adopt another baby. Fate had other plans. My sister decided to foster abandoned puppies. Even though I said many times that I was NOT ready, I ended up babysitting Elsa. One nap did me in. I woke up to a wagging tail and loving brown eyes. I'm scared to death, and I feel overwhelmed, but I'd like to think Bear sent her to save us...

Elsa Rose

Hello,

This is Elsa Rose. We adopted her from a shelter. Elsa, her sister, and their momma were found in an abandoned building. They were all starving and underweight but miraculously alive. I've been wondering what kind of dog she is. Obviously she has the markings of some kind of Shepard. I'm just not sure what she might be mixed with. I'm also wondering if her ears are going to go up. Lol, either way would be cute, but we totally love her floppy ears. She's about 3-4 months old. The last picture is of her sister...

Who knows, there are so many breeds with brindle coats. The most important thing is she has been saved and they now have a wonderful life.

If I gave off the impression that her breed was the most important thing, I apologize. Her saftey and health are all that matter to us. After reading many of the responses to these types of posts, I feel like I should make sure everyone understands that I know Elsa is a mix and not a Dutch Shepherd. I honestly was just curious and thought someone here might be able to help. Take care.

Tell us about yourself: Hilde is a rescue that we suspect is at least partially Dutch Shepherd.

Thanks for rescuing! :wtg: They're both adorable!
As for the breed(s), it's always tough to say, especially at such a young age. Those ears look like they're already trying to come up, but only time will tell. Pictures of the mother might give some clues to at least that 50%. Best is to study up on the behaviors reported here and see if Elsa Rose matches up--if so, hang on... it'll be a wild ride!

This whole "is it DS or not" section can be a bit tricky. Lots of folks come here with a brindle dog convinced it's DS and get a little defensive when some opine that it isn't. OTOH, I've seen some registered working line DS dogs that, going on pictures alone, would be immediately rejected by many here as "not DS." Personally, I think basing a judgement either way on just photos is sketchy at best. Pictures combined with a thorough behavior analysis is as good as we can do, and that still won't be anywhere close to 100% accurate. Maybe someday the DNA tests will catch up to this breed, but today they're useless.

Our Hilde is a rescue and we may never know her parentage. She's on the small side for a DS, but her behavior matches up quite well. For all I know, she's 0% DS, but I've found this site helpful for dealing with her personality. :yernuts: If she walks like a duck and talks like a duck, might as well call her a duck.

Anyway, welcome! And keep the pictures coming, if just so we can wallow in the cuteness!
