New Blood Donor

Post by Brindle »

Happy to announce Force is now helping dogs in need by being a canine blood donor :D
He donated his first unit of blood this past Saturday.
It'll be spun and seperated.
So there will be a unit of PRBC's ( packed red blood cells ) that'll be refrigerated until needed ( can be used up to 6 weeks from donation ), and a unit of plasma which will be frozen ( can be used for several years ), so he can help 2 dogs from the one donation.

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!

Awesome!! What a great thing to do!

Years ago the Vets in my area would keep a donor dog (usually one the vets had "rescued") right at their clinic and the cost was minimal. Now it costs a fortune if your dog needs blood.

oh thats great !!! very awesome!

we have a database for germany, austria, france, NL and switzerland for this. 2 years ago a vet was calling if i have a big dog, beacuse he need blodd for ayoung female - urgently! 20min later i was at the clinic with geremy. they collect 250ml blood and than we have to wait.
she has an autoimmune disease (but i don´t know what exactley)
i crossed my fingers for the female... after a few days the vet called me again and told me that she´s going better... it takes a lot of month, but this is 2 years ago and the female is "healthy" and have a lot of fun. but without his blood she would not still living :(

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

Tell us about yourself: Artist, Mother, Equestrienne, Educator, Homesteader wannabe, dog-lover. Not counting my current DS, I have had 2 GSDs and 3 rescued mixed-breeds. All of these dogs were rescues, except for my childhood GSD, who was a gift from my parents when I was 7, and my current DS who I bartered artwork for from the breeder. Maiyou, one of my current dogs, is a Pitbull/New Guinea Singing Dog of 13 years old. Still very active and "Young" in nature. I now also have a DS named Mokume, (pronounced "Moh-koo-meh") or "Moko" for short. Newest member of our pack is Freyja, a random mixed hound I rescued during a horseback trip in the middle of a state forest.

Thankyou everyone :D

Love how versatile this breed is.

For anyone intrested, canine blood donors are always needed.
Basic requirements are :
A healthy dog, 1 to 8 yrs old, over 50lbs, that hasn't had puppies.
Of course they'll do a health screening first ( exam and bloodwork, no cost to the dog owner ) and assess the dogs personality.
They need to be able to lay very still on their side for a few minutes while the blood is collected. ( large needle in the jugular )

If intrested, call around to the vet clinics near you. They should be able to point you in the direction of a blood donor clinic.

Any members in Oregon, I can get you in touch with the blood bank Force donates to if you're within driving distance of Springfield, just send me a PM if you need details :D
