Overbite
Hello first time poster. So I have a dilemma! My pup has an overbite and was told it was severe. If he was just a pet I wouldn’t mind as his drive and confidence are to die for well get bit for lol. He will be training for IGP and the trainer say nope get rid of him, confirmed with a vet and he says nope won’t correct just by looking at it. From breeder and experienced trainers what is your take on this. Yes the breeder is willing to take the pup back. Will upload photos

Re: Overbite
That sucks. Is the overbite harmful for the pup? Any idea what happens to the pup if you do give it back?

Re: Overbite
The bottom jaw grows last so it will catch up some. The canines are in ok position now but when the adult teeth come in they could be in a bad position and hit the roof of the mouth. Dogs with longer muzzles like collies and shepherds are prone to this. My dog is slightly overshot as well but all her teeth are in the correct position. Your pup looks to be about 4 1/2 months old and the mouth is bad.
If your going to do it do it now. Over and done

This is so sad. I hope the dog isn’t destroyed for having an overbite.

Re: Overbite
He will be 5mos Saturday. The breeder is taking the puppy back has a possible replacement male (brindle) available for same litter. They are also very apologetic as they have not had this issue. Its a 4hr drive so they will send videos and if not they will be having another breeding at the end of the year. They stated it was going to be a repeat but now is second guessing and may proceed to bring in a Pegge dog. I did not ask what will happen to the pup but in formed them he definitely could be suitable for other sports. Super confident low prey and higher defense (an a**hole lol). Since this is my first dog I will take a replacement dog and we will both work thru IPO. This is a hobby to me but if I choose to go further trainer has a lot knowledge and international connects.
PS I’ll be keeping the dog until after it’s adult teeth come in and continue to train him so about an addtl 30days.

Re: Overbite
It’s only harmful if the teeth hit the palate. It’s not good for sport as I was told he’d bite full on top and shallow on bottom. Also will spend a lot of time correcting the bite that will never be correct. I don’t plan or breeding and this is a hobby. Don’t know what will happen to the pup.

Re: Overbite
To be fair I didn’t notice and I only can assume vet thought it was minor enough to not mention when he was checked out during his vaccinations. Took him to a diff vet and had him looked as I was thinking about xrays. Can’t find a vet who knows much about sport dogs in my immediate area despite several clubs in the area lol.

Re: Overbite
I dont think you need a sport dog vet, try an orthopedic vet? THat's who I took sadie too when she was a pup about her hips.

Once his “k9” come in I will. Still going to attend to him as if I was keeping him. He’s a great little pup.

Re: Overbite
The bottom canines should grow outward away from the roof of the mouth. You’ll be able to see if there is any interference between top and bottom canine soon after the adult teeth start getting some length. There are all kind of things that could happen. The bottom canine should be in front of the top . With such a large overbite, those bottom and top canines could be hitting each other.

Re: Overbite
Sorry haven’t been in in a while. Welp his over bite never corrected and lower jaw is narrow. He has know issues with biting but for sport it’s not good. He’s starting to get those indents in the roof of his mouth by his top k9 teeth but still no issues to him. I actually return the pup tomorrow and will wait till the spring for a replacement. He’s 8.5mos now and we’ve been just having fun with IGP training. Breeder will keep him as fun pet. I’ll try and post pics of his mouth.
