Pete the DS

Post by Gabby451 »

We adopted him in May from the Clayton County GA animal shelter. He is approximately a year old. Now neutered, chipped, up to date on inoculations, and healthy. Got him well from a case of kennel cough he brought home. Smart, agile, good nose, strongly motivated by food, aggressive toward other dogs (wants to be the alpha--our AmBull female will have none of it--Pete is at 60#' Tinkie is 110# and as quick as Pete).

He needs a job or he makes one up. We do not have a fenced yard. He is crate trained, and has stopped singing when time to go to bed. He walks on a lead, and will sit and down stay on command from me. He stays on a long line inside. Baby gates are low hurdles, and he is a runner off lead. Will not immediately come when called.

Good for someone who knows these guys, and has fenced space, or he would be a candidate for a true working dog--very smart and drivey.

We have invested so much time and energy bringing him to this point to conclude that because he is what he is, he cannot blend with our household. Hope someone on this list is interested, or knows someone who is. Leave me a message, or respond to this thread.

Tell us about yourself: DS and Mal foster newly approved aug'12 by NADSR and ABMCR. high-functioning Autistic in nyc/hamptons in my 60's. Rescued the smartest dog i had ever seen off nyc street in 2000. Tracedog's intelligence exceeded by multiples my judgement that day. My first [and only as of 10/2012] dog turned out to be a DS, perhaps with a touch of something else, but attention to detail, behavioral traits, and physical habits, movement, and skill identical to DS. But MUCH more intellectual ability. supremely confident in all settings, fearless, very outgoing and social with people and friendly with dogs. Seldom apart in over 12 years, Trace Dog was the most important relationship of my adult life; he was my partner. He died july17,2012. i am dying without him. www.youtube.com/tracesobaka www.dogster.com/dogs/637612

more rewarding may be getting in touch with Trudy at NADSR [ http://www.dutchshepherdrescue.org ] for advice and for a courtesy posting on their site. or she might even have someone right and waiting for this young dog.

Thanks. Will update pictures and contact your link. He looks like a year old version of the short haired brindle standard. Just finishing blowing his coat. Didn't think a creature could carry that much hair! :D

Tell us about yourself: Hi. My name is Debbie, I'm a rescue dog, and I live in Maryland. My foster mom is
Karen and I'm her 9th foster dog. Based on my learning style, markings,
and physical characteristics, several trainers think I'm a DS mix.
When I read about Dutch Shepherds I couldn't believe how the breed characteristics did indeed match me! I'm joining this site to 1) learn more about Dutch Shepherds and 2) a chance of finding a wonderful home. I'm ADOPTABLE!

I believe you when you say you've invested a lot of time and energy in bringing him along. You brought him from a 10 month old little puppy in a big dog body to the start of his teenage years, all while getting him to adjust to a new home.

Thanks for uploading the pictures! I had to laugh when I saw the first photo. A young DS (who didn't receive the best first part to life and ended up in the shelter) could definitely turn one's household up side down.

Sorry I can't help you out as I'm also trying to find a good home for my foster. But I am curious to hear about the singing/vocalization and what you did to help it subside.
