Great start to 2012!

- Tell us about yourself: I live in South-eastern Massachusetts with my husband and our three dogs. One of these is a 2 yr old Dutch Shepherd named Ember. I got her from NADSR in 2010. We like to compete in dock-diving and disc dog competitions and trying anything new!

Great start to 2012!
I just wanted to brag a little about our disc dog competition today. I found a local group on Friday that was having an indoor toss and fetch competition today so we signed up. I took Ember to one competition last year and did ok but today was awesome! My throwing was much better indoors and Ember took first place! We play all the time at home but I was worried she would be distracted or crazy at the event. She walked by tons of people and dogs and stayed totally focused on me and her frisbees! I was very proud of her. Later in the day we had a chance to do some quiet work on her mat on the sidelines and she did very well, even taking treats and offering behaviors. Everyone at the event was super friendly and helpful and they are having three more winter events I hope to take part in. I am hoping this means that 2012 is going to be our year!

- Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.
Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!
I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences. - Location: Victoria BC

I didn't go with anyone to today's competition so I didn't get any video or pics. Here are some pics of the competition we did last year, though. My husband is now feeling guilty he didn't come so I am hoping to have some pics of our next outing...

- Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year! - Location: Corinth, New York

What fun! When is it safe, physically, to ask them to start these types of activities? I'm always afraid of damage to hips before maturity.

Most people recommend similar time lines to agility training for disc dogs. I wouldn't start any flips or big jumps until 16-18mos. There is no problem with them learning sequences, chasing rollers or low discs short distances. Most people find with playing frisbee, the dogs pick it up right away and then not much else matters to them except how YOU through the disc. The human element is the hardest to learn. If you are interested in getting started or learning new tricks check out www.pvybe.com. Ron Watson is awesome and posts a lot of articles and videos. Good stuff!

- Tell us about yourself: I live in Metro-West Boston with my husband and our rescued Dutch Shepherd, Minnie. She loves anything involving activity. Our first rescued DS, Kaya, loved to tug. Our second rescued DS (who actually turned out to be a GSDx), Marley, loved to nap. I volunteer for the North American Dutch Shepherd Rescue and am a member of the NADSR BOD.
