Tell us about yourself: I've had Belgian Malinois for years at my folks. I just got married, and a friend of mine who does search and rescue, had been keeping an eye out for Mali puppies for me. He came across a 9 month old Dutch Shepherd female pup who needed a home. She doesn't have the nerves to do the search and rescue she was intended for, but is perfect pet material. She's enough of a challenge to be alot of fun :)

Maiya just has to lick everything

Post by Tappy4me »

Maiya just has to lick every inch of skin that is available. Shell be playing with Flint, then do a walk by with her tongue out and lick us in passing. She's mouthy too, but is getting better with that. But my question is this, is there any way to break her of licking so much? When corrected for anything,, shell lick even more haha. We tell her no lick and give her something else to mess with (and same with the mouthiness), but I don't have any other ideas. This technique worked on our Mals well. But she's in a totally different realm. She just loves to lick, and is right there with every step we make haha.: )

HA, Sadie is licky licky too !!! If you sit down that is her invite to come over and lick your face, arms anything. She loves to put her nose up my kids shirt, pant leg, anyplace. She used to be more mouthy but she is growing out of it. When Sadie comes over to lick with out asking permission, I turn my face away. Thats (supposed) to be the way of telling them they dont want to be licked. I say "supposed" to because it usually works, but with Sadie, she will follow your face around. She use to be more mouthy too, when I pet her belly she would put her mouth around my arm and just hold me. She seems to be growing out of that now, but I kind of miss it. With the mouthy stuff, I would do the same, not say anything but move my arm away. Most dogs seem to get it a big quicker than Sadie though. With Sadie, its an insecure thing, so I think thats why it has taken her so long to out grow it. When I watch Thalie and Sadie together, Thalie would move away from Saide when she had enough licking.

I bet its caused by insecurity! She seems very insecure of things at times. And she seems a bit of a hard head with learning...haha

Watch her and see when she does it. Sadie is very insecure, she is getting better as she matures, but still is licky licky. When I snuggle with Sadie, she gets tense and will try to lick my face, when I turn away, she will stick her nose in my ear, when I turn again, she will stick her nose in my hair and sniff around, If I pull my head away, she will lick my arm, hand, what ever else she can lick. When I pull every thing away and sit quietly for a bit, she will calm down and I can snuggle with out being licked to death.

Amazing. Everytime I turn around someone is posting about how their DS has this behavior or that, and I say to myself, "that sounds like Radar."

I just got back from a 5 day business trip, and the licking has become more incessant than the once daily I used to get.

Nothing quite like a wet-willy or French kiss from a DS, huh?

Tell us about yourself: DS and Mal foster newly approved aug'12 by NADSR and ABMCR. high-functioning Autistic in nyc/hamptons in my 60's. Rescued the smartest dog i had ever seen off nyc street in 2000. Tracedog's intelligence exceeded by multiples my judgement that day. My first [and only as of 10/2012] dog turned out to be a DS, perhaps with a touch of something else, but attention to detail, behavioral traits, and physical habits, movement, and skill identical to DS. But MUCH more intellectual ability. supremely confident in all settings, fearless, very outgoing and social with people and friendly with dogs. Seldom apart in over 12 years, Trace Dog was the most important relationship of my adult life; he was my partner. He died july17,2012. i am dying without him. www.youtube.com/tracesobaka www.dogster.com/dogs/637612

licking is constant with Sakima, also. any part of me [or anything else]. and he seems to sense when I am most vulnerable to lick strikes. when I go to put on pants in the morning, I point across the room '' go over there; now sit''. he'll comply just long enough that I can go unmolested, but if I forget...

I went through more than 12 years with Tracedog when there might be a split-second kiss once or twice a year, but never licking. can't get use to being treated like a 6-foot tall ice cream cone. the worst is the lizard tongue action that seems to traverse presumed safe distances at light speed to bathe my face in dog saliva. .... did I say I am SOOOO allergic to dogs [ saliva, dander, etc ] that treatments for the allergy would send me to the hospital?!

On technique that I do with super mouthy puppies may work for you.

I just douse myself with taste deterrent - typically tobasco. Then I just get down there and engage in fun behavior - wrestling, whatever. I want the dog to think I am the coolest human ever, but I just taste terrible. The play keeps them engaged and helps them learn alternate ways of interacting to avoid the environmental correction.

Just a thought - but could also make for a great video that we would all love to see!!

HAHAHAH good one Christie !!! John, I love your ice cream cone analogy, its so true!! Except I am only a 5 food tall ice cream cone LOL. Sadie is so quick that I pull one hand away and she has already licked my other hand a gazillion times. I also have learned to put her in a down before I get dressed or I will get a prewash. Sadie also seems to think that kneeling down to get something from under the cabinet is a signal to dive in and wash my face. I have given sadie a bob on the nose, it dosnt seem to help though. I dont want to discipline her for it because she then wont even come over. I just do the pulling away part, and many times will let out a frustrated "Stoooooooooooooooooooop" and run away.
