Some dog owners really suck.
What do you do when your neighbors sweet, but unneutered dog will not go home (because it is 3 years old and has been allowed to roam its entire life and they can not contain him now that Kitsune is about a week into her first heat)...and your neighbor says they can't afford to neuter him or get him out of doggy jail if you call animal control on his horny ass?
You spend $200 getting him fixed and hope it earns you some good karma. Ugh.

That neighbor better never say a bad thing about you or Kitsune then! I'd be sucking up big time around the holidays....

She played the kid card...I couldn't help it. Plus he is a really nice, sound, stable and beautiful German Shepherd. My first breed before I got tired of health and temp. issues. I would keep him in a heart beat if they wanted to get rid of him.

No fence? And why don't they just keep him on a lead until the heat ends?
Super nice of you though and obviously not his fault. He's just doing what he does!!!

Re: Some dog owners really suck.
Thanks guys. He checks in for his snip snip on Wednesday...and he has already been back today, this is going to be a long wait LOL.
I guess they tried locking him in their yard, 3 times now, and he climbs/jumps the fence. He is miserable inside or tied up (he has been allowed to roam freely his whole life) so I am betting when they try those options he makes everyone else miserable too. Getting him fixed is really the only option to cure the impregnation risk...I have no doubt he will be back roaming right away though. He is nice to my kids and doesn't bother my chickens or hogs so I don't mind the extra dog

You're pretty damn nice, lady. My sister has two big intact dogs that she lets roam everywhere. So irresponsible and selfish. And rude!

I don't agree with letting animals roam (granted, I live in the city/suburb), especially when they're not fixed... but I'm gonna refrain from jumping on the soapbox..
but have you checked around for a low cost spay/neuter clinic? I'm lucky there's one right by me, I just checked their website for sh!ts and their neuter cost is only $85

Re: Some dog owners really suck.
Now that we live out in the country...I am running into more people that look at their cats and dogs as livestock instead of pets, and you never fix livestock. It is just upsetting because many of the animals that get put down in shelters, are due to this very behavior....and the good responsible breeders go down with the ship because the shelters are so full. Hopefully there will be a few less GSD mixes out there after he is fixed, I know he has already sired 2 litters

I have looked, even called our county humane society, have had not luck for low cost services. There is one place about $50 cheaper but it is much farther away and the time and gas it would take to get him there and back (which I am also doing) would eat up the savings.

Re: Some dog owners really suck.
that stinks :/ I wish there were more low-cost options, I got super lucky with this one by me, they opened literally only a few months before I got Shylah
I've noticed that too in the country, but it's still very aggravating because like you said, the shelters are swamped, that's one of my biggest pet peeves, I've known people who don't get their animals fixed, but they're also responsible and watch their dog... but the sad fact is the vast majority are NOT responsible... and thousands of animals end up in shelters or euthanized because of it

If you are going to be joining your breeder's training club, then you are around Olympia. Did you call Concern? What about SNAP? Or even Animal Care? Nearest CPC? Or if a little south, what about NW S&N?
Have your neighbor qualify if they are so financially destitute. Heck, it's be cheaper to drive to Portland/Vancouver or even Seattle for any one of their nearly free S/N organizations like PAWS, CAPS, or Doney for example if the owner qualifies vs. shelling out $200.
Then again, I am jaded. If they can afford smart phones, ISP, satellite/cable, booze, or tobacco, it's not really a matter of not being able to afford it. It's a matter of priorities where they want to spend their money and it just so happens it isn't on their intact, roaming stray, 3 yo dog.
Example resources pulled off of Google:
http://www.gingerspetrescue.org/index_s ... linics.asp
http://www.paws.org/cats-and-dogs/spay- ... resources/
http://www.c3seattle.com/spay.html
ETA: Also, I've lived in semi-rural or rural areas for almost my entire life. As such I, like many who have/do, have zero tolerance for stray roaming dogs. They are prone to forming packs and not only harass/kill livestock solo or in groups but also have been known to terrorize school bus stops.

Re: Some dog owners really suck.
Ironically my new neighbor just moved in with an unneutered male shepherd. I heard my girls barking and went out to see him alone in my driveway pretty dog but .... All my girls are spayed so my main concern is that he leave us alone when I walk my dogs. I've already had loose dogs attack my dog on a walk. When I went over to introduce myself I did happen to mention one neighbor has a pit bull that is pretty good about staying in her yard. Haven't seen the gsd out since. Could be coincidence. The other happenings that I didn't mention is the cattle farmer that threatened to shoot one neighbors dog next time the dog ran his cattle or the other neighbor that claims somebody shot his two gsd he let run. I would think if you love your dog, you keep them home and safe just for starters ... crazy!!

Re: Some dog owners really suck.
And I thought owners in the 'burbs letting their dogs off leash in public (leashed only) parks was annoying! I could never imagine just opening my door and letting the dog run around and show up eventually for food... I'd be scared stiff of what could happen.

Re: Some dog owners really suck.
He has pretty much lived on my porch for the last two weeks. It seems once the owners knew I would pay to get him fixed they figured it was no longer a priority to come get him when I text that he is here.
They are lucky he is such a cool dog, he has been barking off coyote's and bobcats for us. He even went up with me after dark to close up the chicken coop. He is a good boy.
We are 2 1/2 hours out of Seattle area, since I am also the one driving him and picking him up I didn't want to go that far. I did find a slightly cheaper place ($170) and he checks in Wednesday morning.
Anyone know the clear out time frame...before he is considered safe and sterile?

I can't even begin to comprehend the mindset of these people--and not just how they take care of (or not take care of) their dog, but how they just flat-out are taking advantage of you.
No good deed goes unpunished.
I hate people.
Geeeeez.
Thank goodness you're doing what you're doing, but I have no idea how you are containing yourself. (Then again, what is there to do?)
We have a neighbor who lately hasn't replaced their animals, but who thought nothing of having kind-hearted people "take care" of their roaming animals. However, they'd deny an animal was theirs if confronted by a neighbor who was fed-up with their uncaring, thoughtless behavior. Why get animals???

Though I can only hope to become the person who my animals believe I am, the things that they have taught me have made me a better human being. ~~~Sharon~~~
