"West" the DS now home on the East Coast!
Hello! I am new here but have been lurking for about a year. We have just spent our third day and fourth night with our new pack member West. We are a family of five (plus one Pom mix) And we recently lost our 2 working line East GSD's who passed the year before and early this year due to old age and illness. They were both PPD trained and were amazing dogs who we miss terribly. We have been researching the DS breed for over a year, and for many reasons wanted to add a DS to our pack. We were lucky enough to find a breeder we thought would fit our needs in the type of dog we wanted. Both my husband and I expect to train him as a PPD and at the least go through the PSA training for the fun of it not so much competitively. Our 3 kids are older teens and have been raised with two large working GSD's and have also been trained themselves in how to work with dogs.
So on to West- surprisingly, he is the sweetest little guy I have had yet. He LOVES cuddles, but knows when it's time to work or play or settle. He can go from t-Rex attack mode right to our side and turn it off to snuggle and settle. I know this probably won't last, but I can honestly say he seems to know that when he is having human bond time he is calm and polite and loves affection from all of us. He is perfect in his crate and knows when he is in his expen (review coming soon) he settles nicely. Because I plan on lifelong training as I do with all my dogs (I have a trainer I worked with in the past in addition to finding a local PSA trainer/member/club) we are ready to go with that.
I'm so glad I found the DS forum as a resource and tool- I know I will be looking for advice and searching topics relevant to something I could use advice on. Enjoy the pics!

He is so "wooly" and I will be sad when he loses his puppy fluff, but can't wait to see his adult sleek shiny coloring!

Re: "West" the DS now home on the East Coast!
Do you know of any others in your area who have a DS? I've lived in New England my whole life and I had never seen a DS in person other than online, training videos etc. Now that I've been researching and more involved, I know of one other person (a trainer I plan to work with) who has two. Thats it! I called my vet the other day to make his puppy appointment and the receptionist had to ask me 3 times to repeat the breed finally I said "Dutch" as in Holland, the Netherlands, that Dutch! She had never heard of the breed. The most annoying part is EVERYONE wants to stop and ask to see the puppy because they've never seen anything like him before and want to know what he is.

I rarely see anyone with this breed. When I lived in the same town as my trainer, they were all over but here, nope, no one.

- Tell us about yourself: I'm Keith, 28 years old born and raised outside Chicago. I adopted Duke, the Dutch Shepherd from a Chicago foster based rescue. Duke had an unfortunate first 2 months of his upbringing but he's been a prince around here ever since.
Healthy, happy, energetic, and super social.

Wow he's adorable. I would have voted for him in the photo contest, but I was bias to mine ^_^

That's just it! What we have called "greyhound" mode is what he does once he is introduced to A new face and accepts them as harmless- let the snuggling begin! They are smarter than you'd average bear - i never have to separate toys of my daughter - he knows his stuffed from Hers without contest.
He assumed the PPD role without professional training needed and is extremely loving.
