Butler University - 2011 Final Four

Post by icvanstra »

Some of you may have heard about a little school in Indianapolis called Butler University. Personally I'm not much of a sports fan, but....

When your alma mater has made it to the NCAA Final Four two years in a row ... well ... you just have to show your pride a little. Especially when they have made it to the final game two years in a row!!! GO DAWGS!

The campus is not far from where I live so I took the dogs over today to grab some shots.

Unfortunately I made a mistake with the camera and some settings where off on the fountain shots. This first photo came out really blue so I cleaned it up in Photoshop. The problem is...the water really is blue and after tweaking the photo, you can see it's blue...just not how blue it really is!

Butler University is famous for Hinkle Fieldhouse. I tried to sneak the dogs inside today for a photo...but I was denied. But Fuzz a.k.a. campeye a.k.a The Butler University Police politely said no... So I have a few shot's from outside and I snagged one from inside with Blue and Hink.

If any of you have seen the movie Hoosiers; it was filmed in Hinkle Fieldhouse while I was attending BU. Looking at the shots during he games in Hinkle I can find people I know among the extra's. I was there ... but have never been able to find myself in any shot!

This is Blue and Hink. This shot is from inside Hinkle Fieldhouse

I was in Hinkle last night watching the game against VCU. This is the image they put up on all the screens at the end of the game:

The campus has change a lot since I was there ... but at the same time, when I go back many things have stayed the same.

The name is new and there is a good sized addition to the back of the building (to the right in the photo).

The Butler University College of Pharmacy (BUCOP) used to put out a shirt that said on the front "Drugs are my life" and on the back it had the BUCOP logo. I've tried to get an updated version of that shirt ... but I've been told that political correctness now a days has stopped Rho Chi from selling that shirt...

And some more photo's of the dogs. The northern end of the campus is Holcomb gardens.

Over the years there have been been people who have been benefactors of Butler University. The Lilly's, Atherton's, Schwitzer, Gallahue and Holcomb. It is Holcomb who has the most things named after himself.

Here are the dogs in front of the observatory. Yes...an observatory in the middle of one of the larger cities in the United States. With all the light pollution now it isn't nearly as useful as it was when it was built.

When Butler moved it's campus the last time they chose the "far north side" of Indianapolis. Almost five miles from downtown. It was north of the last stop on the tram system that existed back then.

The west side of the campus is the canal and just west of that is the White River. Not far to the west is the Indianapolis Museum of Art. ....note to self ;) need to take the dogs over there for some photo's as well. The IMA is on the former grounds of the Lilly Estate. ...Eli Lilly and Company - the pharmaceutical folks.

Here are some photo's of the dog's at the Holcomb Observatory:

Now, James Holcomb had numerous items built on campus that were named after him. The last thing to be built and named for him was this Carillon. Also known on campus as the Holcomb's Last Erection:

Man, do your dogs ever get around. Lucky beasts, they are. (You don't act at all like you like Indianapolis!)

Centuries ago when I lived in D.C., one of the places I used to take my dogs was Teddy Roosevelt Island. (Not on the tourist map, so a great place to go.) Without personally seeing it, it was difficult to image or appreciate the size of the Teddy statue, so I positioned my dogs (as you do) in front of it. Thing was, though, unless you had an equipped SLR back then, you had to stand waaaaay back...where the dogs became mere dots. Yet, the point got made.
Though I can only hope to become the person who my animals believe I am, the things that they have taught me have made me a better human being. ~~~Sharon~~~

Sharon,

I have not moved far from where I grew up .. but yet almost farther than the size of my family's homeland.

I have not seen much of the United States and even less of the world.

But, I do love where I live. Close to a lot and not so close to have the problems. There is a very strong reason why the motto of the state is "Hoosier Hospitality."

.....

The Butler Bulldogs may have not won the championship game tonight ... but you can't tell that to the 10,000 or so people I just spent the evening with.

Some photo's ... and even some of a dog. Please be patient with me as I digress a little from our standard topics of dicussion.

Sadly the Bulldogs just didn't seem to show up the second half of the game. All of those pictures are from pre-game through half-time. UConn won ... :eew:

ROTFLMAO about the 'last erection'. Not a sports fan, other than dog sports, so the world of fans is a foreign one to me, but it is fun peeking in on it.

Tell us about yourself: I have had a DS for almost a year. Gwen and I are considering participating in PSA and or possible Ring Sport. I also have a Great Dane. I have grown up around working GSDs and my last GSD was a working K9 officer. I am all about dogs and animals in general and want to learn as much as I can about training.

Thank you for the peek into Butler!! I am sorry you all did not win, as if anyone really wanted UConn to win another final four... The photos are wonderful to see and we'll cross our fingers for next year but If Michigan State plays all bets are off and to each his own!!

We will have to see if they can hold their own next year. They are losing a couple of key players who are graduating ... but they lost some key players last year as well...

Michigan State? I bought my tickets to the final game last year from some guys wearing green when Butler beat Michigan State. :dsrazz: But we don't bring this up when Christie is around!!

Unfortunataly I cann't see the pictures and that seems to be the case in other topics as well. Don't know what the problem is.
However, ''The Butler Herdershond'' does sound as a great idea. You will be able to convince them, maybe with a little help from a DS. :wtg: :dswink"

Ugh, at least it wasn't as disappointing as this year. I could barely watch their first round game, they played so bad..... Next year is a new year AND Ohio state was knocked out which made me soooo happy. (my family has some pretty fierce rivalries.... I went to MSU, my brother and sister went to U MIch, and my husbands entire family went to OSU) I nearly got kicked out of the family...

I did not realize that Christie went to school there as well....

All I can see are very small squares and when I put my cursor on them a window appears that says ''loading...'' but nothing realy happens. And I cann't save as well. We bought a new laptop and on other forums there were no problems at all, just on DSF.
