Thanks Judith and others.

I do know what BIS means Judith. It is my intention to do shows with Joep in the future and to train him -and myself(!)- we do showtrainings for three weeks now. Our first show will be on November 13th allthough this is a clubmatch not counting for CAC or CACIB. But it will be our kick-off for what might become a great career. And it may sound a little ambitious but I do intend to make him a Dutch champion one day.

"Pluck and go?" Ouch!! Sounds painful; is it? How do the dogs react having this done?

It isn't painfull at all because their fur becomes loose after a while. And by the time they have to be plucked their hair comes off very easy. It takes about two hours to pluck them completely. I'll see if I have some photo's to show you.

Joep is so handsome! But all the photos are beautiful.

Do you find that many people have both a Ruwhaar HH and a Laekense Herder?

In June, I was at Laeken Funday in Hoenderloo, and somebody also brought a Ruwhaar HH.

The following weekend I was at the NHC clubmatch in Soest (Kampioensschapclubmatch) and somebody brought a Laekense. I think different people.

Maybe it was you.

I like the personality of the ruwhaar, both breeds.

I know who you mean at the NHC clubmatch in Soest. We were there to but we didn't bring our Laekenois along, only Joep, someone else did indeed brought her Laekenois as well as her HH roughcoat.
Both the roughcoat and the Laekenois have (alsmost) the same kind of fur, that's why some people call te Laekense the BS roughcoat. But they are different in character, at least that is our experience after having two Laekenois and three DS roughcoats in the past twentytwo years.

LOL! I am practicing my Dutch again and reading that forum again. Just a little, though.

I'm so bad with people's names. I went to talk to the woman with the Laekenois. Now that I think about it, I believe she was Swedish.

What gorgeous boys!! I am curious about their temperment. Are they similar to their long haired and short haired cousins? I sometimes feel like the short haired have been bred for more drive and aggression than was originally there....

We haven't had any experience with the other two varieties so I can't make a good judgement on that. But I do know the roughcoats can be very stubborn to do the things they have learned.

I hate doing the ears!! I have to work on my Laeken's coat tomorrow for a photoshoot. I trim the ears and around the eyes. He will grow a lot of coat if I let it grow, so I take a scissors and trim back his "mane". He also gets "plucked" twice a year.

This is when he was 3 years old and it was the first time his coat grew out. Much too long! I never let it get this long anymore.

Great to see a Laekenois in the US!! And a nice one to, your Laekense. Where's he from?
Do you have any problems with his fur milling after a while? The coat of our Laekense also needs more attention then the DS roughcoats, mainly because of the milling which doesn't happen at the DS as far as I know. We had a another Lakense about twenty years ago and she didn't have this kind of problemt all but i don't know the reason why our present one has.

Here are two photo's of Floor being plucked made with my mobile phone:

You can understand they do get tired after standing in this -or a simular- position for about two hours.

A roughcoat on Youtube which became Best Of Group from the Dutch breeds (there are more breeds from Dutch origin as the DS as you may know). The third dog shown is the roughcoat (although it is not the same as becoming BIS, i know):
