White Patch

Post by Diesel »

I was just curious...I've noticed there doesn't seem to be any other Dutch Shepherds on the forum with any white in their coats (or I haven't noticed). Diesel has a white patch on his chest and a tiny bit on his toes. I have read in the breed standards (I can't remember where exactly) that white is "undesirable" on a Dutch, but is accebtable in the chest or toes.
Any one have any comments on this? I personally think Diesel's patch is quite dapper!

This one mentions white is undesirable in the show ring: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/dutchshepherd.htm
The UKC standard says too much white is a fault.

This image shows the only bit of white that appears on his feet.
The white around his mouth is new-ish...I assume it is greying because he will be 5 this year?

Sadie has a "jet" white patch on her chest and a few white hairs on her chin.
Thalie has white on her nose from maturity. :player:

Look at how Thaile sits - like a regal queen. Now look at Miss Sadie - she is so adorable sitting relaxed like she doesn't have a care in the world!!

BTW, Thalie is squinting in the sun mom - she wants her purple sunglasses

I would not lose sleep over it. ;) I am sure you are not the only one with a DS with a bit of white. It shows against his dark coat, that also seems a bit short (but pictures can be deceiving) for a DS which is why it may show even more? But in the grand scheme of things, it suits him. :wtg:

My inquiry was more out of curiosity than anything. I guess I sometimes wonder how Diesel measures up to the breed standard but it doesn't matter in the end, he is perfect to me.

His coat is rather short, but it's nice, he doesn't shed very much and it is very soft. The only drawback to his short coat is that he is more vulnerable in the cold climate we live in. But he usually puts on a little weight in the winter to compensate.

The white spot on Diesel's chest is within standard.

Boaz doesn't have any white, neither does his one sister who just had puppies, but a few of her puppies have little white patches on their chests.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!
