We have one of those coin operated ones here too. Did you like it? I assumed that by the time you feed all of those quarters, it would be cheaper to use the self-serve at PetCo or Pet Smart.

So did he enjoy it or tolerate it?

Coin operated wash? Self-serve? Cool! Wish we had one of those, bet its cheaper then the U-Bath we use ($16 plus tax) and looks like the same thing.

We generally use the spa self service here in Chicago, it's $18 for a regular dog. They have a lot more silly pampering things like mango face scrubs, and strawberry-lemonade cologne.

I've tried the coin operated one like that at my parents house. It ended up only costing $12 in quarters, but I didn't dry their dog completely. It was warm out, so we just went for a walk before getting in the car.

The nice thing about the upscale ones (at least here) is that everything is included including unlimited shampoo and conditioner in multiple scents and sensitivity levels, as well as the ear cleaner, nail clippers, colone, detanglers, breath spray, high power dryers, etc and there is no limit on amount or time.

Maybe if you could get a good solid rythme down on the coin operated ones, it could be really worth it! For my parents, in a town of 800, the coin-op one is amazing to have, and definitely worth not dealing with the bathtub or cleanup.

We love it!! Actually takes debit card, dollars or coins. We did both dogs for $10. We do just a basic wash and rinse.

I do all my bathing and grooming at home. I have a little scrubber that all the dogs really love. I think you can get them at any beauty parlor/barber. You can put the shampoo directly on it to do the stomach/inside thighs more easily. (They even like to be scrubbed when they aren't getting a bath.) Hair comes out of it easily--just hit it flat on something and the hair comes to the top of the bristles where you just pull it off.

I've got some of those. They are the best! Dogs just melt and want more.

I bathe the dogs at home too. I usually draw a shallow bath and use a container to pour water on them. I need to get a detachable shower head and it would be so much easier! I have a horse comb (Curry comb?) that I use to brush Diesel because his hair is so short. It's similar to the one pictured above but it has shorter nubs and a wider surface...it has never occured to me to bathe him with it. I will definitely try that next time.

no leash!! Marjolein, Odin is so easy going. Not too much gets him riled up (except kitties that run in the house ). I don't know if it is a training thing or not - he came to us like that.

We had no idea how he would react to a bath. We just told him to walk up the ramp into the tub and voila he did.

What do you mean? I didn't mean everyone used tons of stuff like excessive shampoo. I was simply saying that they don't upcharge if you need twice the amount of shampoo for a Great Dane compared to a beagle, or extra dry time for a Bernese Mountain Dog. A lot of places make customers buy dry time in 15 minute chunks.

They custom mix the shampoos based on what the customer says and if they have allergies, or a specific coat type. You have to ask for additional bottles and what breed specific brushes you need, etc and the staff is knowledgeable to cut someone off if they're being unreasonable or using the equipment improperly, but they don't cut people off just for cost reasons. The self wash tubs are at a fully serviced grooming salon, so the groomers come out and make recommendations and educate as well.

In general, most owners know what they're doing and have been bathing their dogs at home or other places before coming in.

I've been in there when a Bernese Mountain Dog was getting washed and blown out, and if they were to pay by the minute, it would would cost a small fortune! They'd never fit that many quarters in their pocket ! For us, we're in and out pretty fast.

I just bathed a Bernese today and I think I ended up with all of his hair. It was HORRIBLE!!

I think that dogs are like people. Some need and benefit from the all natural everything. Some others (well, speaking of a lot of people) benefit from the stinkier the product the better!!! My dogs have never had a problem with any shampoo, or honestly most any product. Since I have some seniors in my group, I'm considering myself lucky!

I bathe my dogs at home. PERIOD. I occasionally bring them in a walk-in shower for a "quickie", otherwise into the basement where the water flows right down a drain. I also have a large "pond", which I used to use for a outdoor fish pond/water garden, but now use for a doggie wading pool or dog bath tub. Super easy for both dogs.

I also tend to bring them both in to the walk-in shower to wash their feet after playing outside, due to excessive mud! Beta knows that its coming and waits at the doggie door for me to tell her its ok to come in. She walks straight in the shower, as it's right off the back door where she plays. She really is an amazing dog....Puddles on the other hand waits 'til she knows I have Beta in the shower and sneaks in, running past and into a closet.......

Lucky for me both girls really love the water for the most part.
