The gas is getting out of hand So I am switching food. I still will do raw, but I want to keep another food on hand. I have a great pet health food store here and I picked up some Earthborn Holistic grain free food. I talked to the owner and asked about some other brands. He said that many are frozen for transport and brands like ORajen arent. Is freezing the food bad? In another post someone said that the food they use has peas instead of Sweet potatoes. Most I have found have sweet potatoes. Bad? This brand has a lot of probiotics and good stuff.

He also told me about Total Zime for gas. When I got sadie I was using regular dog food, I dont remember having any gas, then I switched to raw, She only had gas when I fed pork and it didnt seem to be that bad, some in the early evening but that was it. Chicken never bothered her. Then I added Honest Kitchen and thats when the gas started. Last week I ran out of HK and just had them on meat and the gas was still bad, myhouse is smelly now.

Any advice, ideas? I dont want to make soup with a gassy dog.

Yuk, soup with gassy dog = no good!!

Sugar is gassy too...I feed her Orijen and she farts, but its only a bit. Maybe someone else will have some good suggestion to try.

Odin and Kai fart too - they also eat Orijen. Let me tell you, they are stinky farts. Dakota, the Queen, never farts.

Usually we just smell the "aroma" wafting over...or filling the car...but its really funny when you actually hear one...

hahahahaha, I never hear Sadie, ya know, "silent but violent" Thalie, the queen of her ediquette class, lets teeny weeny squeeks out, and they dont smell at all. One will escape and she will look back like "what was that?" and every so quietly get up and move to a new spot.

No farts, but a question----have you done a stool check for worms lately, and were you still feeding the HK formula that contains cabbage?
I've had the best results with HK Thrive (Chicken) & Embark (Turkey)formulas'. My girls can handle pork, but in limited amounts, so they mostly get beef, chicken, or fish as the meat.

yes, i have done a recent stool test, all good. I did use thrive, not embark, I have to say I stayed away from Thrive because it was really expensive. I didnt check for cabbage though. Keen does have cabbage and I fed Keen, so does Force, and Preference, hmmm. Everything I was feeding her had cabbage.

Last night was the first night on the other food, Farts early on and Sadie woke me to go out, so I let her out, a few more farts but the rest of the night was fart free. Havent had that in a while. Maybe ill use the new food for a bit and let her system even out.

If you switch all at once to the new stuff, you could be setting her up for even more gas/loose stool, etc.

I looked at the site for Earthborn Holistic foods, but they don't tell much about it other than ingredients, and guaranteed analysis. I didn't see info on the source,or quality, of any of the ingredients,including what country they are buying ingredients from. Keep in mind that kibble is baked to death and sometimes contains ingredients that the don't legally need to list. (Like Ethoxyquin used to preserve fish.)

Have you tried adding some enzymes, probiotics, yogurt with live coultures, etc? While I would still try to find a food that better agrees with her, that could at least help.

She does get yogurt, Chobani plain. So far so good but after what Chris posted, id like to find something I know is good. I plan on keeping her on raw as well too, but I am out now so It will just be the kibble for a few days until i can get to the grocery store. I see Orajen mentioned on here alot, maybe that would be better than the brand I picked up? I may get the enzyme stuff the guy at the dog food health store showed me. SHe has been fairly gas free and I like the idea of not waking up at night gagging and im sure she feels better too. Thalie may appreciate it as well.

I feed this food called Canine Life. It comes as a dry mixture of ingredients and you add a meat, green and orange vegetable, apple, and a fish oil, then bake it all into "muffins". You can also buy it all pre baked frozen but its more expensive and you are more limited on what meats/vegetables you get. I'm not sure how available it is outside of Southern Ontario though. We met the owner of the company at a dog park sometime in 2011.

The dogs have tons of energy, only see the vet for required vaccinations, hardly any gas and regular digestive systems. Sometimes the dogs will supplement the diet by hunting squirrels or other small animals, our older dog is a pro, the pup is still learning, I think she is more into playing chase with the animals then hunting.

I don't like kibble just because of how it is produced and haven't fed it once I found out.

I feed pretty fat natural kibble, no farts... only when I feed them dried or fresh tripe..."pfffffffffffffftt"

Chris figured out it was all of the cabbage and rye that she was getting, the HK I was feeding all had cabbage so every time I switched I wasnt helping becuase I didnt know what was bothering her so I wanst eliminating the right products. She has been fine on the food I am feeding now and I do plan on getting her back on the HK that dosnt have cabbage and rye.

That cabbage will do it all the time - even for us humans!!
