Dutch Shepherd Forum

So I had my brindle with me yesterday at work. No one at the clinic had ever met a Dutch. Koenig was VERY well behaved, minus the screaming in the run all day long.. lol.

They all came to the conclusion that a DS is just a GSD with stripes. WELL... not really..... lol. Simple minds, I guess. My dog is big ( 85lbs ) but he's still not much anything like a GSD, minus the size. Oh well.

I thought it was funny anyhow, and invited them all out to SchH on Sunday to see what the Dutch can REALLY do!

I better get back to repairing the bite suit that Koenig and the other DS ripped last week.

I know a trainer who veiled their lack of knowing that there was such a thing as a Dutch shepherd. (Many people don't! No shame in that!) I saw through it, and it was okay. They really didn't even take the breed (it's just a GS-mix wannabe) seriously until another professional commented on the Dutch. So they boned up on the breed (secretly).

Then the trainer got a "rescue" call to re-train a Dutch.

It went from "A Dutch what? Yeah...whatever" to respect and appreciation.

I hope that your co-workers show up...or even learn more about the breed. Especially as professionals, it would serve them well.

My vet is wonderful. Knew about the breed the first time I took one in, and put only her top-notch staff forward whenever we came in from that point on. (Her staff didn't know the Dutch, but they were curious and interested, and never took that ho-hum, just a wannabe stance.)

I'm envious that you can show off your pride in that manner! Hey! You had that! (They'll get it...sooner or later.)

Our vet decided he was a malinois because he couldn't figure out how to "add a breed" to his computer system. Then his computer told him brindel was not a known color for the breed. THEN the computer would not issue a recept until the breed was established correctly..... So we called him "unknown mixed breed". Poor Dee.

Good to know others have had this problem. The place I take Ember for play time when I am gone a long day didn't believe me that she was a Dutch Shepherd. They had obviously never heard of it so they said, "what else could she be?" I said she couldn't be anything else because she's a DS but to put whatever they wanted in the computer. They settled on GSD mix. They totally had the attitude that I could not possibly know what I am talking about and I am just trying to make something up for my "mutt". Oh well, Ember doesn't seem to mind

I just had this come up at the vet last week as I went in for a health certificate in case I needed it to go to Canada or come back to the US. The receptionist had put one of our dogs in as a GSD and said they didn't have Dutch Shepherd in there. But Monday the vet noticed the breed was wrong on the paperwork. I told her what had happened and she said she will make sure they put Dutch Shepherd into the computer. I think I'd prefer mix over GSD.

My vet has DS in their system. Of course, since I have used him for 14 years and he has seen oodels of them by now.
The receptionist still asks what color the dog is that I have with me (I check in first, get the dog out of the truck afterwards) and I always throw a bit of a teasing "how about brindle"? at her.
They had a new vet working there once, who, when I came in went "OMG...you know what kind of dog that is?"
I think it went right over her head, when I said "I sure hope so, since I bred this pup' (that I was bringing in for a health certificate prior to shipping) She proceeded to tell me that she had treated one in a city close by, and this was a Dutch Shepherd. Not only that, but the dog she had treated was a K9! Oh whoooo---pie! Impress me. Anyway. That vet did not work there long. She was, indeed, the ditz that she seemed to be that particular day. a week or so later, she cut the spleen on a dog that they were spaying, and it took quite an effort to stop the bleeding

When out in public with my brindles, I will admit that I get very tired of answering the same question over and over again. I need to get a T shirt that says something like "I am with the Dutch Shepherd" with a finger pointing downward to the left.

At least Geyser is listed as a Shepherd Mix at my vet's office. I guess, if you go back far enough in the creation of the breed, it's even true (giving them the benefit of the doubt that they don't mean GSD mix, which of course, they do...)

Malinois mix would be closer.

Yup...but I'm using "shepherd" in the most generic of ways, in that any herding dog is a shepherd.

Personally, I don't get too upset about how my vet lists my dog. They're not about to update their computer system for one client, and life it too short to get upset about this kind of thing, at least, to me

I get a lot more riled up about not being able to compete with her in AKC without having her spayed.

We live in a very small town (a village to be more correct). We are getting our first DS, a rescue (most likely a mix) on Thursday. Long story short, I think I'll be needing one of those shirts when they come out!!

I'll let y'all know when they're ready!
