Dutch Shepherd Forum

Hello. My name is Kent. I am a new member on the forum. I am exploring the Dutch Shepherd dog as my next prospect. I previously owned a GSD Czech. It has been several years since I had to put him down. He was like my kid so the effect has stayed with me for quite a while. I am now ready for another dog.

I split my time between Southern CA and Kingman, AZ. I am looking for a reputable breeder of the Dutch Shepherd in these areas. I am also looking for a reputable trainer and for KNPV organization. Any assistance or suggestions would be welcome. It would be nice to see the puppy I am getting before it arrives, but I am also aware that purchasing from a good breeder is most important.

I am also looking for confirmation in my research that the Dutch Shepherd dog is the right one for me.

I'm new to this forum too, from up in northern Ca.

What do you want to do with a dutch if you opt for one? what kind of lifestyle do you have? Is he going to travel with you?

I know of no KNPV groups around Ca, hence why I am training for IPO. I train a place that has A LOT of german shepards, but also other types of dogs, in fact a tiny jack russel and poodle was in class last week. It's really nice to train at a good facility.

What did you do with your GSD?

If your interested when the time is right and if a DS would be a good choice for you, I know of a DS breeder, in northern Ca (not currently advertising) with KNPV dogs-all serious working dogs to working homes. All imports from belgium/Ireland esc, mostly from Berry 2 lines with a few other well known working dogs.

Then again, there is always rescue too! while I have never rescued a DS there is one specifically for DS. (I have adopted from Muttville senior dog rescue 3 times but the old guys don't last long and I was super sad losing a dog every year).

Welcome! The trainer in Long Beach I emailed you about trains with a PSA club that uses her place and she also has some French Ring connections. I don't know of any KNPV groups, but I honestly don't know much about KNPV in the states.

There's almost 0 KNPV trainers/clubs/sport in the US. It tried to take hold a few years ago but never made it. I think most of those who still dabble are in Florida/NE.

What are you going to do with your Dutch? They are very different from GSD, even the working Czech lines, and need a job. I look forward to hearing about what you did with your GSD in the past and your experience with working dogs.

As far as breeders, I wouldn't recommend ones in AZ, and I would choose your lines very carefully for what you want to do. Depending on your goal I can make further recommendations for reputable breeders for you to interview but you may end up not going with a local breeder. In the end I advise to trade geographic location for quality and the RIGHT dog.

If you are more interested in a rescue dog who can do the work, there's a woman I can recommend who is a rock star and places a lot of working prospects to forever sport and LE homes. There's also green dogs breeders will occasionally have. I know everyone want a puppy for supposed "stronger bonding" but depending on what you will be doing and your past experience a green dog may be better suited temperament wise and handling wise. Just my two cents - either way welcome to the forum and please feel free to ask any and every Q you may have!
