How closely related are DS and Malinois?

I've now had several people stop and ask if Grendel is a Malinois , including one guy with an adult Malinois. My neighbor has a DS and a Malinois, so I'm familiar with their appearance as adults. however, after googling pictures, I see Grendel really does look like a Malinois puppy, with the addition of some stripes. The other two puppies I saw from her litter looked exactly like Malinoises and had no stripes at all. The owner said others had commented the same.

I was really struck by a Wikipedia photo of Malinois puppy- it could be mistaken for Grendel!

I know DS and malinois are closely related- but how closely? Is it possible Grendel's mom was actually DS/Malinois, or is there really not much difference between them other than coat color/drive?

She's certainly crazy but she does relax and "turn off." (thankfully!)

we have had this discussion before with some great discussions. Can you do a search and see if that answers your questions?

I just read some of the posts. Seems like there is no definite answer!
Either way, Grendel is gorgeous and a great, crazy puppy!

I'm surprised that there aren't more GSD/DS mixes. I would think that would be a popular mix since GSD seem to have a rep for being a bit less independent and have the touted "off switch.

I'm banking on the GSD half of Grendel to make my life a little easier as she grows up....

They are very close. Basically, if you have a fawn dog, its a Mal, if it has stripes, its a DS. There are subtle differences but over all they are very very close.

If you have a fawn dog, it is a mal?

If a DS throws a fawn you could register it as a mal or a DS. My old trainer had a fawn DS

The chances are pretty slim. Christie had posted about that a while ago. there was a good thread about genetics. Do a search for it, it is interesting.

I hadn't ever thought about a fawn colored dutch shepherd but Cher Car had a little with one real cute pic of siblings on their website . Has the fawn, blue, and black siblings in the pic. Yep, guess it was rare and that is why they posted.

Interesting. The other two females in Grendel's litter looked exactly like malinois pups. I didn't see the males as they had all already been taken. But her sisters were all fawn except for black mask and I believe some slight darkening around feet maybe. No stripes at all.
I actually have a bit of a concern about Grendel's dad...supposedly it was the big male GSD on the property. However, there was another dog on the property that turned out to be Grendel's older brother. Def a mix of the GSD and Grendel's mom. According to the owner, the older brother was about 9 months old. Given the appearance of both Grendel and her sisters, I'm now wondering if there's a chance that the older brother is actually the father. :(
The vet said that, while not great, such a breeding would probably not be harmful. I hope not!

Yes. My female Asia's litter had three other "Duchie" siblings and I think about six Malinois siblings. The dogs were primarily sold to police departments if I remember right. I know her one brother, a Mal is a Narcotics dog. She on the other hand is striped so she's a Dutchie.

Kind of like Black Labs and Yellow Labs- all from the same littler.

A fawn Ds can be registered as either.

Not really. UKC, AKC, and most FCI countries don't allow it. The dog is registered as the parents' breed and listed as a fault color. Cross breeding is not allowed in most kennel clubs, even though it is a somewhat common practice for our breed. Most dogs with mal/DS parents are not registered in any official capacity, unless you're registering under a performance listing for non-conformation events. Only in open studbook countries can you register based on appearance with certain other conditions met. Puerto Rico still allows it if a judge views the dog in some official capacity.

In KNPV, it would be listed as an DSX or MalX, but they're not really a registry in the sense that most think about it. With sports registries such as USDAA, WCRL, CPE, etc you could pick either, but they're not a studbook and don't track pedigrees or require photographs. Most don't consider them a registry, but rather a titling venue.

I think with UKC they have to have at least three to five generations of the same breed. I know when I spoke to them on the phone they said also that I couldn't register a dog that was crossed with other dogs. I got Riddick registered and I think there might be a few Mal's in the lines way back but other than that, he's got all Dutchies. I need to update the pics in the database, he's filled out a lot since those were taken. He's easily about fifteen pounds heavier now.
