We will soon have a newborn roughcoated puppy, born on the 17th of March. These are the first picture from the nest, a total of six have been born:

Lovely! I was hoping that you would post Rita's litter on this list. Most here have never seen rough haired DS's and even rarer, their new borns. Keep us posted! it will be fun to see your new pup grow up right in front of us.

I will Judith, I know I haven't posted much here lately but that had its reasons, sorry for that. I keep you all posted for sure!

Do curlys have the same colors as smooth coats? I was looking at your other pictures and your brindle was next to a light colored curly, is there also just Fawn and brindle? I love how her eyes POP out from the coat, and her grey makes her look like she has one of the old time mustaches. I just want to grab her nose and kiss it.

Sue: Only if the rough coated dog him/herself is the product of a smooth(short) x rough, mated to a short haired partner.

Since Jan may have forgotten to answer that, allow me:
Rough haired DS's can blue brindle "or blue". The blue, however, is also brindle. Definition does not show as easily in a rough coat vs short, so it is easier to tell when they are freshly trimmed or still young, but the rough hair is also brindle. Fawn would be considered a fault, though in theory (and rarely) it could happen. The fawn dog that you may have seen in Jan's other pictures is a Lakenois, which is, of course, the rough coated variety of the Belgian shepherd. As you know: Sort=malinois, Long=Tervuren. Long in black=Groenendaeler, Rough=lakenois. The latter is, for some strange reason, not recognized by the AKC.

Thank you for answering this question Judith, I have forgotten to explain myself, you were right, sorry for this Dutchringgirl.
We, my wife and I, are fond of roughcoats in common and DS and BS specially. It has always been our dream to have both a roughcoat DS and a Laekenois together although their character can be rather different, at least that is our experience from the present and teh past. With Floor( DS) and Bas (Laekenois) our dream has come true and from now one we try to keep the double, that is way we have choosen for a DS-puppy again since Floor is the oldest dog here. This means that in the (far) future we will probably look for another Lakenois-puppy again.

Out of curiosity, and I suspect it really wouldn't make a make a difference, but do rough coats and long coats have the same personalities and the short coats? I wouldn't assume it would matter, but I've only ever seen the short coat varieties in both DS's and BS's. I wouldn't mind a DS "werewolf" one day, lol.

Short coated varieties in both DS and BS are more likely to perform in the (police/protection) work department. The number of long and rough coated dogs are much lower as well, which would hamper finding a long or a rough coat as K9.
Numbers wise, the rough coats could be in real trouble already when it comes to an unrelated population needed for survival. :eek They could sure use some 'werewolf' (I LOVE it!) marketing.
All the varieties share some similar temperament in some fields, but differ in others. A lot will depend on bloodlines, but the short haired dogs in the US are mostly out of KNPV working lines, making them different in both looks and temperament, from the short haired (FCI) version in the first place, creating even a bigger personality gap between the three.

It is our aim to use this male roughcoat for breeding reasons in the future as well, in order to make a -small- contribution tot the population.
The Laekonois faced the same kind of trouble by the way, that is why they have brought in de Malinois at some point. This has made an important contribution to the number of Laekenois nowadays but their character as well as their apperances has changed a lot (we think), the one we have (Bas) is an oldtype breed which is no longer recognised by the Belgian Shepherd Society. Right now there is only one breeder of this type of Laekenois and some breeders are trying to get the former characteristics back step by step but that will taken many years and many litters of course.
