I have to admit, I'm disappointed in this result. I would have like to have seen more precautions introduced.

I am still reading it, but so far it looks like the department may have more to blame than the officer. It looks like they did not have any standard operating procedures for the K9 units and the suspended officer was never given training on his equipment that was supposed to keep Ike safe.

I agree. I know the officer had to have been devastated and in no way meant to endanger the dog. However, it doesn't seem the department created a purposeful mindset to caring for their canine members. So many little errors compounded to the final result.
