Dutch Shepherd Forum

Let me start by stating that I have no dogs currently, but am very interested in this breed. I have been searching for the right dog that is intelligent, trainable, energetic and phisically sound. Something that will be around for a good long time, and the Dutch shepherd caught my eye. I've joined this forum more for fact finding reasons. I reside in upstate New York, in the finger lakes region, and am interested to know if anyone could direct me to a club or breeders in New York, or even Northern Pa.

What kind of club are you looking for?

I'm just trying to find a breeders club or network of breeder/ owners where i can find a reputable person to buy from. Everything I've read about Dutch Shepherds so far is so positive, these dogs have all the characteristics I'm looking for in a good solid family pet. I'm an active owner, having had dogs before (boxers growing up, then a golden retriever/lab cross once on my own) I know the importance of keeping a dogs metal and physical energy engaged. I have been looking at german shepherds, and found alot of interest in their dutch cousins on the web. I'm a little leary about germans because of some pretty bad stories concerning health from friends and familly, also I like the conformation of dutch shepherds. They seem sleeker and more agile than some of the heavy germans I've seen. Too bad it's such a rare breed here. They are very hard to find, and some of the prices associated with rare breeds can be a bit unreasonable.

I am not absolutely certain, but I don't think there is a breeders club for DS in this country.

Asheley (whose site it is) is a wonderful breeder..in fact, I'm picking up a pup from her this afternoon .

She has links on her site to several other DS breeders who are all great as well, so that's a place to start for you.

If you want 'cheap' DS's have you considered DS rescue? They often have deserving dogs and sometimes, I believe, even pups.

There happens to be a rescue group in my area called Brightstar which rescues GSD's. A friend told me to contact them, sometimes they have dutch shepherds or can help me find a rescue group. Thankyou for the advice, when we find our dog i'll be sure to post pictures. Untill then the hunt continues
