This is amazing. I like the battle cry "My dog is Friendly!" People really DO shout that.

And shouting, "So is mine but we're working on training with her and she has to learn some self-control!" is really too long to shout back.

I immediately posted this on my Facebook page after I read it. I love the fact that half the dogs that championed with the "He's friendly" yell, actually aren't They are pulling up towards us with stiff posturing and various other signs of not being the best bet to be friendly. My general response to the "He's friendly" is "Well I'M not!" That one has a decent amount of success.

Great article! I am tempted to print out the part about the dog that is "trained to stay in his own yard" but charges you and put it in the mailbox of an offender. No one can even take their dogs on a walk without being followed, charged and occasionally humped by an intact Jack Russell who's owner won't keep him up.

Fortunately, MY DINOS likes him. Unfortunately it ruins our training until we can lose him.

My corso is dog reactive. Fortunately for us, most people cross to the other side of the street with their dogs or think twice about coming up to him He's actually very friendly when properly introduced and he adores people. Although we still get the odd one and yes their "friendly" dog ain't always all that friendly as they would like to believe.

hmm, no one comes up to us. Thats fine with me though. Im usually walking both the girls and they are in a heal, so Thalie is next to me and Sadie next to Thalie, I get " nice dogs" but no one comes up to me wanting to pet them. Maybe two dutchies looks very scarey??

The sad thing is that the people who really need to read this, won't, or won't recognize themselves in it, or just figure they have a Special Dispensation.

I have become very good at being rude, if that's what you want to call it. I don't let anyone, dog or human, approach my dog without my permission. I body block, kick if I have to.

This whole topic happens to be one of my pet peeves . And, people seem to think asking, "is your dog friendly?" is equivalent to asking, "may my dog greet yours?" or "may I pet your dog?" I just say No to everything .

(Lately, we were doing an outing at a Bass Pro Shop on a very busy Sunday. I will give the kids credit; lots of children asked if they could pet my dog, which is a new thing in my experience. But, you should have seen their faces when I said, "no, thanks for asking!" They could not believe they were getting a refusal )

Everyone is always wanting to pet Merlin too. I'm glad that they are interested in him and what breed he is, but he gets very excited and tends to jump on young people (we are working on this) . My mother in law, who is used to little poodles, gets Merlin to get up in her lap! She says, "Oh, he is just a baby, let me hug him!" Grrr, I try to explain to her that yes he is a baby NOW, but eventually he will be a big baby and not a lapdog. Although, there are times that I sit in the floor with him and hug all over him, its not him jumping up in my lap and me holding him while Im in a recliner. I really wish that people would respect others feeling towards their dogs! I think that I will teach Merlin the gaurd object command, then have him gaurd a rock.... point of the story when we are walking, someone starts to come towards us, give the command, he looks crazy, they walk the other way

Despite frantic efforts to cross the street or hiding between parked cars, DINOS are chased down by other people walking dogs, who refuse to believe that there is someone out there that do not want to meet them.



I, however, have never had this problem since Dingo was about 7 months old. People started to give us space spontaniously

There are times ill go into the Bronx ( part of New York City) ( can be a bad place but good food) with my parents with the dogs, they have a Basset and Ill have Thalie. Everyone comes over to see the basset "oh how cute ! look at the sad eyes!" but NO ONE comes near Thalie, and she is just begging to be pet.

When I saw this on Facebook last week I just about died. It's funny in a sad way though, as more people than not don't seem to have any dog sense. What I've found interesting with Ku is that when we are out walking or running, people may stare and be fascinated but by and large they keep their distance and will even put their own dogs on leashes which I very much appreciate. But when we are at DockDogs, it's a whole other story...

I can't even count the number of times now when we are in our own personal canopy space waiting to jump (you get two turns but they aren't back to back so their is waiting time in between) and he's in full drive and I am doing what I can to keep him distracted from the dock/pool and keep him in control, and a stranger comes up wanting to pet him. Reason would say that taking one look at him would signal that perhaps it's not the right time but you'd be amazed how oblivious people are. The best is when they sneak up behind me and I look over my shoulder to find them reaching out to him. Now Ku is pretty good with people in general, he has gotten way better since we got him as far as his reaction to strangers, and when he's in drive he's really only focused on what he wants (in this case to go play on the dock so he can get his toy) but, hello! Please don't reach out your hand to a dog who has incredible drive and who may think you have something he wants. We have worked countless hours to reduce his tendency to alligator-snap something out of your hand but he's a young dog with a long way to go and when he is that excited and worked up I don't need someone he doesn't know testing his self-control.

I understand the attraction people have to these dogs but I wish they would have a little more common sense and not give me a dirty look when I tell them "No, you can't pet him right now." And for the life of me I don't get why they would even want to.

I've worked in an animal-related field for a very long time but I am still amazed by many people's behavior.

That is crazy, if he is competing you would think people would not want to interupt his thought. Its not a time for him to calm down and take pets its a time of focus. I personally would be afraid I would take him out of the zone, if I asked to pet him. People don't think!

I actually had to say that to a guy on the beach to make him stop putting his naked foot on Marco's toy, trying to grab it. What an idiot!
Somehow we attract these people who like to try to control "the beast". I never in my right mind would walk up to someone else's dog and grab it's toy. It was especially annoying when we were still working on the "out". Here I just got some progress with that exercise and then comes the next idiot, grabbing his toy and plays tug without knowing the "rules" I established and pulles Marco with the toy along the beach.
I got so annoyed with people that we stopped going to the beach. It is anyway difficult for my senior lab to walk in the sand and Marco swallowed always a lot of sand or salt water when fetching his toy and the result were either really sandy poopies or some "water fountains". Now we are going to a place where most of the time no people are around = piece and quiet
