Their ear canals are fully developed around 3 years of age.

That's great your neighbor looking into rescueing a Lab. A lot of them end up in shelters since people underestimate their energy level. They see the cute Lab in the toilet paper commercial and want one not knowing that they are bred originally for hunting and can run a whole day or, as an alternative, chew up your house.

My Labs were a great preparation for a DS. Marco added to the high energy level I was used to, determination and focus. :player: And my senior Lab got a little "energy boost" since I have Marco. Today, he tried to chase some cats, he tripped over a tree root with his old wobbly legs and fell, I helped him up and he went after the cats again. I love this dude to pieces. He is an inspiration with his almost 14 years.

well.... I have to admit that I didnt know Labs were high energy too, I guess its a no brainer since they are hunting dogs. Since I have always been active myself and always had work dogs, I had a Pitt/ Rott mix when I had my horse farm, I dont think about dogs that are "labeled" as high drive, its been normal for me to be around active people with active dogs. A friend I had eons ago would bring her two labs to the farm and they would run around all day. I guess high drive is normal for me. I have to say though, Im worried about my neighbors with a higher drive dog. They are stressed as it is, 3 kids, both work.

14 years??? that is fantastic, sorry he tripped and fell though. poor fella, i bet Marco will keep him young.

My mom bred labs for years. They are great dogs, they learn fast, listen well, and will do just about anything to make you happy. Nothing with a drive compared to a DS in what I have seen. She had a female that had a litter of 14 puppies once, it was the last litter my mom let her have. It was awesome in our house until they started crapping everywhere lol. Labs are the only dogs I have ever had til my Merlin. My mom lovesssssssss them and they are actually the only dog she ever owned for over 35 years until she got a weenie dog. They are sweet little babies, but every breed can have crazies!

Judith, Im sorry but I had to laugh when you called them gremlins and said they tore up your pants with you in them. I can just see the little beasts ripping at everything. lol Sure it wasn't funny at the time, but I bet they were pretty little monsters :) :ds:

With all due respect but I don't think my Labs (coming from two different lines) are/were crazy. With a few exceptions, the Lab owners I met over the last 14 years were sharing the same experience, i.e. mayhem until around 3 years of age, then angels until they die.

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.

I keep telling myself to just "shut Up"--------But I have to ask, Are we talking about "family pets" or a babysitter to keep the kids busy??? I don't believe kids should ever be left unattended with any dog----no matter what breed-----until both dog & kid are fully trained----and sometimes not ever. You just can't expect a dog not to play rough when kids love to be running, screaming, throwing their arms around, etc. (and don't ya'll love the "pet" over the top of the head-where the kids keep pulling the hand up--then everone can't understand why the dog is jumpin' on the kids and knockin' them down) Kids are not trainers, and dogs are not baby sitters. When people came to see pups here, If the kids didn't "behave well", then that family didn't get a pup. (I'll shut up now) :twocents:

Leih is right, I have to admit. And so is Choochi. You never see "this dog will drive you to drinking" in print, but it would be a pretty appropriate label for, let's say a JRT, a BC, some DS, etc etc. :sinterklaas:

I must however, tell you that not all JRT's are crazy. The foundation bitch at this kennel was whelped here from a co-ownership litter. She and her littermates were all very sweet--I kept two. Mom is Oaks Edge Bianca--who is my bed partner, and the sweatest JRT anyone could ask for.

I think my neighbors are in for a big surprise then if they get a lab pup! I told them to get one at lease a year, the hubby agrees but she wants to do the puppy thing!

Nearly 40 years ago, I was given a black Lab pup off of champion field trial stock. Very stable temperament socially and biddable but she chewed til the day she died at age 13. Chewed everything and then some. Woke up one summer morning and looked over the decorated lawn. My Lab had chewed up a bright orange 100 foot extension cord in 2-3 foot length pieces - looked like orange snakes all over!!

Most of the Labs that I see now in our local shelter and at a local boarding kennel do not exhibit the same social temperament that my Lab did. Nerve bags even with proper training.

Carole, so you have that 'circle' problem too with your Dutch. My Zip has to remain inside in her room, crated or short stays in a small kennel because if left out in the acre fenced yard, she will find a corner and do figure eights or circles non-stop for hours or until I bring her back in. If I leave her out often for periods of time, she will end up a bag of bones with running off every ounce of fat. Once inside, she surprisingly will lay quietly on her bed.

Tell us about yourself: I have five dogs: Alex, a chow mix who is now about 14, and four Dutch shepherds (all rescued DS): Ku (Hawaiian God of War), Kane (sounds like "Kahnay"; Hawaiian God of the Sun), Kanaloa (Hawaiian God of the Sea) and Kapua (Hawaiian gods of mischief - the Mischief Makers). Alex is our cheerleader and keeps the 4 DS in line. Three of the DS currently compete in DockDogs and we are trying to convince Lo that water is not evil. Our team name is Hawaiian by Heart which comes from the old joke by my husband that he is "Dutch by blood, Hawaiian by Heart." Our main goal is to promote having fun with your dog (and by doing so becoming partners) and supporting the rescue of the wonderful animals out there in need of homes.

We lost our big lady, Kelley, in May 2012 to cancer and she joins several other angel dogs who are now watching over us.

I wish everyone who is thinking about adding a DS to their life would read this thread and your experience. I fear that as they gain popularity we'll have more and more "breeders" who will allow anyone to take one home, promising them things that just aren't a reality. I've had high-energy, high-drive, crazy, nutso dogs my entire life, but I can't agree more that DS are not for 99% of the population. And I love this idea:
(Suggest we attach a label to most DS pups...don't try this at home")
We thought long and hard before even considering adding a Mal or a DS to our home and when the opportunity came to adopt Ku my husband and I sat down and made sure we were ready to embark on another journey with a super high-drive dog and we had the time and desire to work with him and give him the outlets he needs for his energy and intelligence. The last 6 months has been a challenge but we have also seen some great rewards as we've watched Ku develop and mature and settle down...just a smidge. ;) But the amount of time we have put into him is incredible and by no means is he where he needs to be. So it's with a different level of emphasis than with other breeds when I tell people that these dogs are NOT for everyone.

I applaud you for realizing that you cannot give Tara the life she needs or deserves but please, follow through with those instincts and there are plenty of people who can help find her not only a GOOD home, but the RIGHT home.

And as for Labs being "easy" or low energy I couldn't disagree more although I have met a few who might fall into that category. I've had Labs my entire life as has my husband, and they were all complete nutjobs who never truly outgrew their puppyhood. Some things decreased like destroying everything in their path, but they need a "job" just as most dogs who are bred for a purpose do. And as mentioned, too many of them now suffer from overbreeding/poor breeding which creates sketchy temperaments.

What prepared me for my DS? A little black Lab named Gryphon (pronounced Griffin). His drive and energy equalled Ku's on every level and this dog would have worked until he dropped. Even at 13 in the late stages of lymphoma he was driven to retrieve...to be on the move constantly. When people ask me when Labs "settle down" I always laugh and say "never" or when they pass the age of 11 or 12. We remark on a daily basis how alike Gryphon and Ku's behaviors are because they are the hallmarks of high drive dogs and I wake up every day thinking about what I need to do to funnel that energy so it doesn't come out in a bad way. But I love that challenge and I love these types of dogs. I do hope you find Tara a suitable home where she can thrive and know that by doing so you are doing the right thing. And if you ever consider getting another dog, keep this lesson close to your heart and head and don't believe what anyone may promise you. It's up to you to honestly judge what is best for your family.

Here's my DS in Lab clothing. The incredible, irreplacable, one-of-a-kind Gryphon (also known as Gritty or Grits). Oh how I wish sometimes he and Ku could have met but then I shudder to think of the mayhem they would have caused.

Gryphon made his DockDogs debut at the young age of 11 1/2!

Good luck to you and keep us posted on her status and any pictures would be helpful for possible adopters.

Love the Lab pic's, my best ever obedience dog was a Lab that I borrowed from my hunting Uncle when I was a 4-H kid! He later in life became my "Demo Dog" when I taught beginners OB for the 4-H.

Also wanted to say that my "rant" in the last post was a general thing, not directed to anyone specific.

Reading this makes me glad I have about 4 'sports' lined up for when we get a DS. My JRT has been a living nightmare from day 1 but we love him to bits even if his nickname is 'The Git'.. no lie. He was my first dog after I left home and he's taught me more in the last 7 years than most 'pet' owners learn in a lifetime. He's also lucky to have someone like me who is patient enough, adaptable and energetic enough to keep him on his toes. I'm pretty sure had he been with anyone else he would have been shipped from home to home. I like the label ' don't try this at home' made me laugh. I've always said to people who get a JRT, if you like being sane, don't get a JRT. I'm a bit crazy for a reason.. I used to be normal.. I swear

I'm no good at quoting.. anyway

the JRT is a trained cat chaser, when we first got him we taught him to chase all cats out of our garden, he even caught one by the tail once.. thankfully that cat never came back and our garden has been cat free ever since

I bet it must have been chaos with squirrels around
