Here are a few pics of recall (2 different times) - amazing!! They both came racing towards me and of course no one is around(husband just went inside), so glad I had the camera

Tonight, Thor was going Rambo over an animal in the woods; I opened the door (which usually does the trick by itself) but he was super-amped about whatever it was out there tonight so I had to give a command. It wasn't so much bend the knees as it was get-the-hell-outta-the-way as he barrelled through door. (And then inside was a matter of, "BUT, MOM, HOLY CRAP!")

Thanks, but those recalls were amazing because there weren't any "animals" to distract them. They were playing with each other and I've been practicing recalling them when they are engaged together. It's still a BIG work in progress with "distractions".
When Odin is that amped up outside in the yard, no command yet works - I have to go get him with the leash and bring him in.

Maybe you can leave a long line on him, so he gets to play etc in the yard, and you can pick up the line without him noticing, then recall. This way you can correct and he will get what you want from him.
Going towards him to go and get him is not helping him get the point

The first shot is so siblings running together. Odin looks like he's checking to make sure he isn't the only one being recalled. I love it!

This is how I got Merlin to recall. I would hold the longggg rope, give the command, and if he didn't come I would slowly pull him in still giving the command. Then hugggggg him when he got to me. He still hesitates when he sees deer, but we are working on it

I would not haul him in slowly, a short quick tug to give a correction would make things much clearer for a dog I believe. They do this amongst each other too, they don't grab an ear and pull the other dog towards them slowly, if they want them to stick with the pack. They will be told so with a quick bump of the nose, or a little nip by the leader dog.

Thats a good point, he probably would have caught on faster, if I had given a quick tug. I will have to keep that in mind, when deer are around!
