Tell us about yourself: I am 31, from Alberta, Canada, and I just adopted an 8-10 month old male Dutch shepherd from my local SPCA. I'm really looking forward to getting to know him and learning how to work with him to bring out the very best of his potential.

He pees on his feet

Post by JennieLeigh »

So I just brought my boy home from the spca today. I'm over the moon. I love him. He's soooooo sweet. So calm. So nice.

But he pees on his front feet!! And on our walk today he lifted his leg to pee on a wall and ended up peeing all over his own side!!! How he managed it, I don't know. But. Gross!!!

He's 8-10 months, and was just neutered yesterday.

How do I correct this behaviour!? Will he grow out of it? Help!

Tell us about yourself: DS and Mal foster newly approved aug'12 by NADSR and ABMCR. high-functioning Autistic in nyc/hamptons in my 60's. Rescued the smartest dog i had ever seen off nyc street in 2000. Tracedog's intelligence exceeded by multiples my judgement that day. My first [and only as of 10/2012] dog turned out to be a DS, perhaps with a touch of something else, but attention to detail, behavioral traits, and physical habits, movement, and skill identical to DS. But MUCH more intellectual ability. supremely confident in all settings, fearless, very outgoing and social with people and friendly with dogs. i am not sure what you mean that he peed ''all over his side''. did it bounce off the wall?

in any case, they learn. they all pee on their own feet and such for a bit til they figure out how to do it right - all by themselves.
nothing to do but wait and savor the amusement of it all. if there is something that could be done, i would love to hear it for the heck of it --- but i would hate to spoil the fun. it really is just puppyhood. besides, if he lifted his leg, he has already advanced a lot - at least his tummy and front legs are not getting drenched.

besides, if i was just neutered yesterday, i would probably be wondering where to aim also.

Wait you mean they grow out of it? I consider it luck when my guy doesn't! lol. He's still young and will figure it out. I swear sometimes my guy does it just to see me wince.

Lol. Xander and my last ds never figured out how to lift a leg. They spread out and pee like a male horse. So Xander does occasionally pee on his front feet when it sprays that far. I just rinse his feet off and keep going.

Haha!

By peeing all over his side I mean, he lifted his leg to pee on the wall, he...I don't know, aimed wrong, and peed all over his side up by his front arm pit. Lmao. I was on the phone with my cousin because we were walking up to her house, and I was like, um, he peed all over himself just now. He's drenched and dripping. So when you meet him, don't pet him there. Lol.

It was highly amusing. And I bought some grooming wipes at Petsmart because the spca dude was like, oh yah...he was laying in his pee this morning, so you'll want to clean him up somehow but you can't bath him.

I was like, can do. So thank god I have those for his pee feet. Lol.

Fingers crossed he figures it out. :DSangel:

Mobil doesn't lift his leg yet, so he pees on his feet a lot.

I got Radar when he was about 10 months old, and he's never had a problem peeing, but...

He does this weird thing every now and then. He will lift his leg like he's peeing, but then he starts pooping with his leg up in the air :yernuts:

Ah I love those grooming wipes! Also great for mud when you don't want to grab the hose and make the mud problem worse!

HAH! H does the same thing! He'll be peeing and sometimes start while the leg is lifted or squat on whatever he was just peeing on. He was in the habit for a while of when he needed to poo he would back up onto things and poo arched like a cat. No squating. He's successfully did this on trees, lamp posts, fire hydrants, chain link fences, once a car (my back was turned), and a cactus (again back turned and amazingly enough no needles in his rear). I asked his vet and she didn't believe me until she witnessed him pooing onto a tree. Nothing wrong, apparently he just liked the challenge and working his bowel control I guess.

My boys have never grown out of it. Odin still does it occasionally, although he doesn't lift his leg as much with the back arthritis developing more. The best thing for him is to pee in tall grass so it has something to hit before his legs. Try owning 3 male English Setters in show coat. You have to bathe and condition their "pee coat" nearly everyday or it will become brittle and stained.

Now Elli, she has learned to pee like a boy too. She'll lift one leg and then lose balance and lift the other. If she has too much pee, she'll fall in it after losing balance on the 2nd leg. There's also the occasional peeing on Odin's head because she doesn't have the right parts to aim and he's unaware of her need to shift.

I'm getting a bit off topic here, but all this pee talk reminded me of our dearly departed Finnish Spitz, Hannah. Sometime during her early life, she decided she hated to have pee run onto one of her rear feet. For example, if it didn't soak into the ground quickly enough and instead ran across a slope to her downhill foot. She started by lifting the one leg she thought was most likely in peril. Over time, she decided that to be safe, she would just lift both legs. People would stare in wonder to see this dog stop, stand up on her front legs and shoot pee backwards. Often she would actually walk forward on her front legs while doing this. I'm sure I have a picture or video of this somewhere... I must browse my archives at home...

This is how Mobil poops. He doesn't squat. He arches his back and does the equivalent of standing on his tiptoes and leaning his elbows on his knees. It's bizarre.

Took over four months, but while preparing for a move, we finally found a single picture of this handstand-peeing! It's an actual analog photo (remember those?) that I just scanned:

OMG. That is absolutely the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. I feel your pain but I can't help but laugh. Is he still peeing on his feet or has he figured it out?
