Mr weird ears

Post by cordeliandemon »

Demon must be nearing six months and he's still got a funny ear, not a huge deal, but his seems a little different to what I've been reading. His funky ear isn't soft, it's got a lot of cartilage like his normal ear and both are very solid, but one seems to have set wrong and the base is almost closed together at the crease keeping the ear in a constant lean-to ontop of his head.
They don't sell or ship ear forms to Ireland as far as I've found, most likely because they're used for shaping Doberman ears and docking is illegal here. I managed to get a relative in Florida to buy some and send them over last week and they haven't arrived yet. I just wonder if it will work on a more solid ear. it pretty much just needs to splint the base open wide where the cartilage is too squished together and the top of the ear does the rest itself, but I've only really seen reviews and instructions on soft ears. Would you guys have any tips?

I've been told all the other guard dogs will laugh at him behind his back if I don't sort it out

He gets a bit spooked by the camera so it's hard to get a more relaxed example

My recommendation is patience.

At six months there is still a LOT of changes going on.

Thank you for the advice :) it looks like that's my only option as it stands, with no sign of those ear forms arriving anytime soon

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!

Do they sell moleskin there? It may help until your ear forms arrive.

im not sure, but even if i could find some there would be no way for me to get it. i just spent everything i have today on a new dog house, muzzle, puppy food and dog bed for inside it as there was a leak in demons stable last night. when he found his bed wet he took it upon himself to tear it to sheds -_- so now ive got to put a dog house inside the stable room to make double sure it wont happen again.
ontop of that i now have to get the malamute koda spayed and wont be spending a cent untill i have that sorted once and for all. with her stubborness, dog/food/toy agression and strength combined with demons all-round crazy they would bring beautiful little satan puppies into the world.
the last thing we need are more unwanted dogs out there, especially THAT mix.

all i can do is wait, hopefully customes didnt take the dog forms.

Ha I'll keep that in mind, got myself into a bit of a worry seeing people taping ears at four and five months all over YouTube  I'm sure it'll be fine, better things to focus on now anyway!
He's really doing great in terms of training and behaviour in general now.
Though I had to walk to the post office a few miles away today and couldn't help but be on edge all on my own due to the ptsd , hoping to find a better trainer for him soon so I'll be able to take him with me in future and not worry. He's a great support to have around, even so young.

Tell us about yourself: My name is Karen and I have a dutch shepherd, Xander, born 6/14/13. He is my second dutch shepherd. My first was Rawly. Even though Xander is my second I still have a lot to learn. That is why I'm here, to learn, get advice, and meet people who love these guys as much as I do.

My Xander's ears didn't stay up and get it right until around 9 1/2 months. I was worried and I posted and taped. But now I realize they would have done it on their own anyway. Lol. Enjoy the funny ears while you can.
