New Feeder: Thoughts?

Post by Raven »

I'm looking for a dispenser that is a cross between the two I have: one's a cube where you can adjust the opening but cube is large enough where I fear Thor's jaws will lock around it (don't use it); the other is a KONG with a large single hole (too easy).

Has anyone seen a sturdy dispenser that's maybe about 3" in diameter with adjustable opening? Especially with the size of kibble these days (tiny!), adjustable would be better.

He's a gulper, so when he eats kibble, it's out of a dispenser: to slow him down and make him work for it. (I'll hand-feed raw--and kibble on occasion but not like I used to, when he was first being trained.)

I had this bowl for Sadie when she was a pup, it had a rim so she had to go underneath and it was shaped like a doughnut it really worked.

Have you thought about getting a tennis ball (or one of the larger ones that they sell at petstores. I get a gigantic one from PetSupplies Plus) and just cutting your own holes in there to match the size of your kibbles? They're cheap and easy to replace, and easy to match to your own needs if you need to adjust the slits or holes. I just use a box cutter to make my own holes.

Thanks, all. I'm always on Amazon but never looked there for this. :duh: Haven't found what I need but am still browsing. (Everything I've ever gerry-rigged at home is too easy for him, of course.)

Owly, the tennis ball sounded intriguing until the thought of loading up cupfuls of those tiny Earthborn kibbles hit me, and as long as it would take to do that, he'd have them out in a blink...........but.........I'm going to try that idea for a new treat dispenser. Just make slits a bit on the larger side (no holes) and shove some raw carrot chunks in; it'd operate like one of those pliable slit coin purses.

I browsed through these and picked one out for Xander to slow him down a bit. It worked well. He are a couple pics of examples.

This is the method we're using with Nami for treats, in an attempt to teach her "fetch" >_> That and to work with her fear of strangers. She's forced to ask for help if she wants a treat out of the tennis ball, and she isn't allowed to rip it a part to get to it. The moment she starts ripping the felt off(she loves to systematically "preen" the felt away with her front teeth), the ball goes away and some other toy comes out.

If you are just trying to slow him down I have used a cookie tray. Just spread the food out so he can only get a small bit at a time. On the Kong are you using the Wobbler
http://www.amazon.com/KONG-Wobbler-Trea ... ng+wobbler
It can get a little loud when they are eating but not to bad.

I have the KONG Wobbler. The hole is pretty big. It's become my go-to dispenser for kibble meals; I'd love for it to have an opening of which you can control the size. (The other kibble dispenser I have and don't use has that control, but like I said, that dispenser is big enough for him to conceivably get his jaws locked.)

I've tried everything from putting big rocks in a bowl and on a tray, to muffin tins, to.... The Wobbler has proved the best, though, so far.

Thanks, all. Still looking through your suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to help.

You could always build that thing that was linked on here a while ago. The soda bottles attached to a wooden dowel. Make'em work for the meal. xD

After reading the video's description, apparently the O made this contraption because she gobbles her food down too fast too!

one thing that has worked for me is putting several of the metal [ silver ] balls that comes in pairs in cloth boxes [ i think of them as chinese singing balls, but i think they have a name/purpose not known to me ]. anyway, not only do they get in the way of gulping, but if moved too aggressively, they make clanging noises, which the dog then tries to prevent by being gentle and moving slowly. worked unbelievably well and quickly with Tracer who inhaled his kibble and was immune to my usual methods.
