He is about 5 months old and been so far trained purely using marker training without any corrections thus far. I am looking for some help with him as he is dog reactive when on leash, inside or in the car while driving.
So we've been doing mostly marker training and have come a long way from the land shark that walked down the street side ways attached to my pants leg. Fuss needless to say has been an easy position thus far to teach, letting go of pants legs well that is a work in progress. Which was much helped by giving him a tug or ball to carry while walking. He has also picked up sitz, hier, and lass es very quickly but the problem we have been having is with platz. I'll be trying to post a video a little later as a visual aid but so far we've just started on working on luring him into position but he'll get his front feet down but his butt stays up in the air. When guiding his butt down his front end pops up much like a teeter totter. I tried to lure him under my legs while I was sitting on the floor but have not had much success with this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated it.
Sadie would do the same thing, I would put a treat in my hand and my hand on the floor and the front would go down and the butt would stay up. I just waited her out and didnt move until the butt went down, then marked it then treat. If his front comes up just try waiting him out until the whole body is down.
Tell us about yourself: We current own 1 Dutch Shepherd - ThunderHawk's Child of Lilith "Mazikeen" And we have loved and lost 3 - Vrijheid's Amie "Vada", Vrijheid's Hafwen "Letty" and Sather's High On Life "Narcotic". We train/compete in mondioring and agility.
You could lure with food in both hands and your hands together and push under the dog's nose and into his chest. You want them to fold back into the down. Then the butt should go down first.

I like that better, we taught them to do that with back tying.
You could also break the position down and shape it. Reward just a shoulder shift until that is consistent. Then reward perhaps a small movement of the paw...whatever is offered up as a next small part of moving into the down without bringing the butt up.
Tell us about yourself: I have had a DS for almost a year. Gwen and I are considering participating in PSA and or possible Ring Sport. I also have a Great Dane. I have grown up around working GSDs and my last GSD was a working K9 officer. I am all about dogs and animals in general and want to learn as much as I can about training.
@Christie, I have used that method to teach Gwen other things besides platz. That is how I taught Gwen how to "put your head down." I taught Gwen down from the sit so her but was already on the floor. I led her down from the sit with food to her chest. We had issues when we started and sometimes I would get sit instead of down but with time and repetition ...

I did that today with Sadie and it worked, she moved back then down. I too do the down from sit so one end is already down, it still pops up sometimes but its a whole lot better.

Thanks it clicked after you said it, after waiting a little bit and some backing up we are back on track and molding a wonderful platz. I'm glad that I found this forum as its been a bit since I had a puppy and not some how talked into helping to save a misunderstood yet very cute adolescent pup. So thank you again

Well my dutch needs a lot more work and practice, while my german is pretty proficient.
Soon as I figure out the software for my camera I'll post the nonsense of my DUTCH shepherd doing german commands.

I'm not really sure if it would be really hard for someone who learned english first to learn german second. I grew up in a duel household so I learned both at the same time as a child. I don't have many people around to use my german with so I've forgotten some of it but I've recently been using it more often.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.
Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!
I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.
