today was even worse! 13 celcius (55.4 F) strong winds, all people camping on the coastline campsites have been advised to go home or secure their tents with extra storm-lines Imagine spending your holiday with 3 kids there now! Ahhhh!

It is so hot and dry, that I now have a beach front home. Minus the ocean.

Denise. I spotted that most of the trees that are turning brown right now, are huge old oaks.

I hear thunder, but still, not a drop and this is week 3 of straight triple digits (with our usual 90+ % humidity)
I would honestly LOVE to have 50's weather!

We are lucki to have gone into colder weather, because overhere we have had serious drought too. In spring there was hardly any rain, when normally Holland/Germany is pretty wet. The tree never got to unfold their leaves properly and most tree's have not been able to make up for it. You can see right trough them standing under them. The rain falling now, is too late.
But it's nothing compared to Texas, ofcourse. Worst thing is, if there finally IS rain, the ground will not be able to absorp it and you get floods everywhere...

Very true

I had a water hose dripping yesterday, under the suffering azaleas. It totally flooded another area of the yard, since it ran staight off the soil (and yet I have been watering those azaleas, so that soil is actually better of that most of the rest)

I know this sounds ludicrous

but it is so dry here that we are all saying we wish a decent sized hurricane would brew in the gulf because by the time it gets up this far inland, it is mostly just really good soaking rain like Rita and Gustav did. But then again the day Katrina hit, it was sunny and gorgeous, not a drop of rain.

But the grass is dead and gone at my farm so it would end up being a mud hole. I would certainly hate to see any of the majestic old live oaks die.

Same here Denise. I am watching hurricanes develop and think "bring it on" but of course, I am further inland than you are. I passed a stretch of land yesteray, where 50% of the trees were dead, even huge mature ones.

I can no longer fool myself into thinking that is it just an occasional sick tree to begin with.
Grass long gone, or like Leih described, the brittle fiberglass feel. Day 22 of the triple digits. And did I mention it has not rained for weeks?

We had some little floods in holland today, same problem, no rain for weeks, and suddenly it has been rainy and windy like it's autumn. Soil is too dry so the streets of Roermond were flooded:

wow, thats crazy Marjolein!! Today was so hot !! My mom has a friend in Texas that had to get rid of all of her cows it was so hot.

I bet now the price of food goes way up--- Can't wait to see what I'll have to pay for hay this year. First cutting went to seed because all the spring rain made it too wet for equipment to harvest & now the hay is burning up before they can get the second cutting on the ground. My pup is getting crazy because it's too hot to work her/or play/or breath. I guess we'll go to the river today.

you mean he had to get rid of them because they had no more grass to eat and water to drink, right?

Yep probably as that is what is happening here also. Cost of hay/feed right now is not cost productive. Better to sell and cut your losses than hold on them and take a gamble. I usually dont have to buy hay this time of year but am having to do so. Just hope a decent supply will be available for the winter.

Yes, sorry. She sent them to another farm where they had more water and food and not as hot

a few years ago the price of hay sky rocketed when people from down south were coming to Michigan to bid on hay at the auctions it was terrible and they drove the prices up to seven bucks a bale and 72 for a round bale.. I sure don't want to see that happen again.. everyone loses..

$72 per round bale - $7 for square?!!!!! GOOD GOLLY MOLLY!!!! We've been paying $30 per round bale. Periodically I buy some prime square bales from a local supply just for my few sheep at $4.50/square. I sure hope we dont have to drive a distance to keep our supply up but will do whatever I have to. East of us (MS, AL) have been getting rain as well as most of Arkansas so I am sure they will have some. Gotta figure in the gas if have to transport.

Its' so hot.........we had a few sprinkles of rain yest as I was leaving work, walking across the parking lot, and you could hear the drops sizzle and evaporate as they hit the vehicles!

Had no soaking down here for a long time. I cannot speak for Denise, but I would be thrilled with $ 7.00 square bales. Right now, they are already at $9.00 and of course the supply/demand will drive prices up as this drought continues. You have no idea how this is. 54 days of 100+ degree weather this summer and right now 42 consequtive days (and counting) At his point, I think we need 40 days and 40 nights of rain. My dogs can only work in short sessions, and get to hang out inside for the afternoons. My productivity has plummeted so a historic low.

Just moved to Texas ! Now this is a state that knows how to live!!
Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings.
It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.

June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an
air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to
see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshiper.

June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus
and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me.
Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used
to this kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting
used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th:
Fell asleep by the community pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my
body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my
lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.

July 20th:
I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this
morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and
swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water
balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and Shits. I learned my
lesson though. No more pets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes
again.

July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's
hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC
repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order
parts.

July 30th:
Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house
and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever
come here?

Aug. 4th:
Its 108 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost
$500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state.

Aug. 8th:
If another wise @ss cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to
strangle him. D*mn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is
boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!

Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on
the seats in the car, I thought my butt was on fire. My skin melted to
the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my
legs and behind . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried @ss, and
baked cat.

Aug 10th:
The weather report might as well be a d*mn recording. Hot and sunny.
Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do shit for 2 months
and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week.
Doesn't it ever rain in this d*mn state? Water rationing will be next,
so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the
cactus can't live in this d*mn heat.

Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 110 today.
Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the d*mn windshield out of the car.
The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?"
My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. Freaking Texas .
What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Will write later to let you know how
the trial goes.

Well, no hurricane headed this way, no rain in sight, not a single drop for months. Crops are all burnt. The huge trees are dropping limbs and splitting trunks. Neighbors very large, old live oak split and took out their two vehicles along with that side of the house. I wont let anyone park underneath our oaks or especially the pecan tree just in case. I swear we are in an invisible ginormous bubble as any rain showers just skirt us. I had been pampering my lawn grass and we were the only ones on the street that actually had green grass. Told hubby not to mow as it had stopped growing anyway. So what happens, my idiot bro-in-law bought one of those zero turn radius ($9000) mowers and was trying it out on any and everyone's yards he could find and he chose mine before I came home one day from work and SCALPED IT!!! I am so livid with him right now and my husband for allowing him to.

How hot is it.....?
It is freezing in my office at work so when I leave to walk to my car in the parking lot in the 105+ temp, I actually condensate!
