if you are going to feed only dry food, then i would try to get one that is really healthy rather than focus on the relative cost. this is absolutely no comment on acana and orijen as i have not read medical reviews of them, but vet school journals have had high praise for merrick products in their respective categories. they have a grain free bison dry food - about $50 for 25#. the very best dry food is air-dried meat and organs from kiwi peak in new zealand, but it is VERY expensive compared to any other dry alternatives. I WOULD BET THAT YOUR DOG WILL NOT ''EAT LIKE A BIRD'' IF GIVEN GOOD NUTRITIOUS ALTERNATIVES. could you consider once a day or every other day adding a can of merrick working dog stew or using kiwi peak to supplement daily feeding of a higher quality dry food like merrick? [ suggest searching for independent scientific comparisons of foods and the practices and methods the companies use; i do know merrick rates extremely high for ingredients, processing methods, and their processing facilities.] there are also dry supplements you can add to food to assure full array of enzymes, vitamins and minerals - like 'platinum performance'
you did not really say whether the smell was horrendous such as others have implied about the anal gland possibility. i have been around a number of ds and have now had 2 light-coated ones like you have. i have noticed the 2 light-colored ones [in their early years only] developed a doggy-sweat smell when active, especially outside in more humid weather. [ this includes long walks on leash in the big city, so no possibility of exposure to anything organic.] it is not what i consider horrendous, but it is not pleasant, is very noticeable, and dissipates quickly. right now i have a light-coated and a more typical dark ds; both same age at 8 mos, same diet, same exercise. the light one stinks of this sweaty smell for a few minutes when he comes in; the dark one has no such smell and he is the more active one getting into more trouble outside. if not sweat, it does seem to be something excreted through the skin. it always puzzled me back 11 years ago -- and here i am again now with the same coming-in-from-the-outside smell. hopefully see pups attached
