After working with the military working dogs I had the chance to encounter a few Dutch Shepherds and fell in love with the breed. By pure chance I happened to spot a Dutch Shepherd who was up for adoption after failing her police k9 training, we snatched her up right away and Zodiac has been an amazing companion who now excells at Competitive Rally Obedience.

Hello from Zodiac

Post by Zodiac »

I just joined the forum, so hello everyone! I have a 3-ish Dutch Shepherd named Zodiac who I adopted in May of 2009. I work with Military Working Dogs for a living and fell in love with the breed but never really thought about getting one. Then I saw my girl while she was out in a Humane Society awareness run and it was love at first sight! This dog has made my life much more fun and I can't imagine having any other breed now that I've had a Dutch Shepherd.

Here are some pictures:

In the picture below you can see many of the various toys Zodiac has...yet instead of playing with one of her toys she is instead tearing up one of the cat's toys!

Congratulations on your new family member!

Even better yet it looks like you got lucky with Zodiac and the cat getting along. None of the rescues I've had ever liked my cat(s) and my current DS went crazy thinking that Fred (my last cat) was a chew toy.

Best of luck with Zodiac.

It is so hard to take a photo of the dark Dutch Shepherd against snow. Either the snow is blown out or the DS is a blob of black.

Funny photo of Zodiac with his tongue out.

When we first got the cat of course Zodiac wanted to chase her, but after keeping her on her leash for a few days and correcting her when she tried to get the cat she learned pretty quickly that "Oh, that's not a prey animal". Now she's great with the cat, so we did get very lucky with her. When we take her to visit my in-laws she is great with their cat too, so it's not just with our cat.

Yes, I have SUCH a difficult time getting a good photo of Zodiac. Her markings are so beautiful but I have yet to get a photo that does her justice!
