Well I think I might have a new one.

Post by Mark77 »

So my wife's co-worker saw pics of our dogs and on a whim bought one from the same kennels we got Riddick. 24 hours later realizes it's a bit of a task. Now this isn't an ordinary Hollander. She's part of a litter that was purposely bred for military or police. She is more of an extreme dog, not a Dutchie but instead a Mal. So now she's here with the agreement that after thirty days he's buying a house and will take her back because of issues with his apartment complex. I'm used to working dogs but not sure I'm ready for the task of training one up again if he decides he can't keep her. He paid a nice sum to get her and I talked to the breeder, he was surprised that she was sold by his partner to a newb in this stuff.

Pics up soon of the new terror. FYI, she's eight weeks old.

I, too, wondered why a breeder (legit, anyway) would sell a working dog to someone with no experience.

At what age did they sell her if she's eight-weeks now?

If the buyer wasn't up for the task a minute ago, how will they be up for it in a month?

Will the breeder take her back, considering who they sold to?

This is the stuff that burns me up. People do stuff on a whim with out really, and I mean really checking out what is involved. the dog is the one who suffers.

If this is a military or police breeding, there is going to be trouble, im sure the drive is going to be high. And MAl to boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why do you want to be the one to keep her if he cant? Why clean up his mess. I would send the dog back and scold the breeder !

I talked last night to the original owner of LOZ K9. He sold his business rights to a new owner. However he is still actively involved to some level. Now here is what happened, the guy that bought this dog formerly owned a pit bull that he raised from a pup through adult hood and finally till it passed. The guy is extremely sports active and was very active with his former pit, ran with the dog every morning several miles etc. That was the only reason they sold him this dog because he said he was wanting to work the dog.

LOZ did say they would take it back if needed. However I'm thinking I might keep her. I did tell the guy to check out protection sports and see if that is something he's willing to commit himself to along with working her two hours a day minimum. If I keep her, then at least she'll go to an experienced working dog home- though I was a newb to all this just three years ago. I'll get some pics up.

Tell us about yourself: DS and Mal foster newly approved aug'12 by NADSR and ABMCR. high-functioning Autistic in nyc/hamptons in my 60's. Rescued the smartest dog i had ever seen off nyc street in 2000. Tracedog's intelligence exceeded by multiples my judgement that day. My first [and only as of 10/2012] dog turned out to be a DS, perhaps with a touch of something else, but attention to detail, behavioral traits, and physical habits, movement, and skill identical to DS. But MUCH more intellectual ability. supremely confident in all settings, fearless, very outgoing and social with people and friendly with dogs. Seldom apart in over 12 years, Trace Dog was the most important relationship of my adult life; he was my partner. He died july17,2012. i am dying without him. www.youtube.com/tracesobaka www.dogster.com/dogs/637612

but Riddick is very laid back and is a total joy as far as i can tell. don't remember any input about Asia.
this new dog could be VERY different from anything you are used to. putting aside the question of handling skills, your life could be changed in a way you really might not want. depends what you expect of your dogs.

i expect mine to ''get'' me and my world. one of them does that very well, like Riddick with you. the other 2 not so much, but in very different ways. but neither falls short on that score in the MANNER that certain Mals i have met would. they just do not let up; i am highly doubtful that i have the capability to mold such a dog so that it would be compatible with my household. of course, we do not really know if this puppy is such a dog, but give serious thought to the possible outcomes and what you would find acceptable.

I had a pit, no where near DS. There is no way of knowing. Thalie is super mellow and has always been but Sadie is a spazoid and always will be, but I knew what I was getting into. John is right, Mals do not let up, they go go go go go go go, Sadie at least does sleep. Sadie is only compatible because I had done so much work with this breed before her. This is a whole different world than running with a pit. One DS is NOT like the other

The thing with Dutchies or Mal's is that you never kind of know what kind of puppies you'll get- even with awesome parents. I got lucky so far with my other two. The new ones bloodlines are such that I think someone would want her. If the guy doesn't keep her and the wife is OK, I'll just start working her. I'll get pics up soon, I promise- just really tired today since I didn't get much sleep last night.

I'm just gonna say this: LOZ is known for their serious and hard dogs. Most experienced sport handlers in the few clubs around here have LOZ dogs. Those are dogs that MUST be worked and in full sport homes and usually go very far in the sport. I'd be very surprised if he managed to get a fairly relaxed dog from them. If you do keep her, just be aware she will probably be very different from Ridick. Not sure about Asia, I don't recall you mentioning how she is, so I can't say. But if that's from the litter I heard about... The owner better learn reeeeeaaaaal fast.

Oooooo I'd like to hear that story dogbyte! Was it a former owner selling pups he bought or LOZ selling directly?

Talked tonight to the guy that bought her. Basically she will be staying here with us until he gets a bigger house in a few weeks. I told him he could do board and training along with even training with her. I offered to be there through the initial transition, start her training now by working with her. If it doesn't work out, then I guess I have a new dog. Here is the little monster with my other monsters.

I'm glad the owner has someone who is familiar with high drive dogs to help him out. I hope it all works out; if not, keep the number of the kennel on hand! I hope she's not as serious as the recent breeding I heard about, which may not even be the one she came from. Good luck!

I'll put it this way, LOZ has the female Kona that they imported out of Czech Republic specifically searching for a hard drives Mal female. LOZ also has a solid male Mal named Nero. However this litter was not from Nero. They purposely searched for the hardest Mal stateside that they could find and paid over $2k in stud fees to get access to that sire. This is one of those pups from that very specific breeding. This little pup will be a hard dog.

However right now, she's just one happy little pup learning her place in my pack.

I have to vent.

A breeder breeds specifically for a hard litter and sells a pup to guy who ran a couple miles with a pit? My extreme dissatisfaction and disappointment is evident in the question.

This pup needs to be someone's serious responsibility, especially if bred to be hard, and not passed around like some cute kutchie-kutchie-koo dog. What if you hadn't been there to help her, Mark? Luckily, yes, you were, but her future is unknown.

Mark, I'm glad she's in your care--this is not directed at you--and it's only my opinion that she can't wait until some guy who bought her on a whim gets "settled" and gets up to par with the caliber of that girl. He doesn't have that kind of time--nor does she.

I'll gladly eat my words if this guy takes her and this all ends very well for her.

I will second Ravens words. I hard dog is for military, police or someone who has [had] a previous one and is into a hard sport. Someone who runs with a Pit cannot really think they are ready for a hard dog. I had a pit, and she was no where near what my two girls are like and they werent even bread for major stuff.

I think there are too many people breeding extreme dogs without the outlet for the dogs...not all dogs in the litter will have all it takes to be a working dog. But they are usually not for the person who is not experienced with high drive dogs..And what is the definition of "hard" ? My girl was an uh-0h litter..and the temperament was not the best in many of the litter for working..insecure in strange buildings, around strange people...but the smartest and one of the most fun pups I've been owned by...that being said that is why the craigslist find..The least drivey pup was sold to a family that found out she was way more than they could deal with and didn't like their kids (who knows how the kids were to the pup) and the one male returned because he didn't have the nerve to be a working dog...again listed on craigslist. Breeders learn and grow...I have watched a GSD breeder become someone I would trust to buy a puppy from..and she breeds really strong working Czech lines..So hopefully this is a learning experience that is not at the expense of a ton of puppies.....My pup had a great start in bite work put on her..and the sharp/civil what ever you want to call it appears to be genetic and acknowledged by the breeder..not how he wanted to breed......but none the less, you produce it you are responsible for it forever....rant over...love my Dutch and won't trade her for any other dog..learn from each one that is in my life.
