January 2011 Photo Contest - Gezellig

Post by icvanstra »

Getting the contest up a little early this time. Technically I'm working today, but I've had one phone call and one email all morning. :sinterklaas: ...i.e. I'm a little bored.

I'm giving a leg up to our Dutch speaking members this month by using a Dutch word for this months theme: gezellig

Native Dutch speakers will tell you it translates to "cozy" in English. Being a native 'American English' speaker, Dutch a very distant second language, who has learned the meaning of gezellig through my own experiences hearing the word used ... they are only partly correct. It is a word that changes meaning based upon the use of it. I'm sure there are a couple of Dutch members who are going to disagree with me on this and I look forward to learning from them. ;)

So...

NL: gezellig
EN: cozy or see this wikipedia article for some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gezellig

.......

The usual rules with a new one this month:
1) submit one photo
2) you must have the rights to the photo
3) put the dog's name in the posting of the photo

Voting will start at the end of January.

When we first got Zonya at 6mo old, she had this habit of climbing into bed, getting under the covers and sleeping with her head on the pillow. Very cozy.

mmhm, maybe you could add that you CANNOT be "gezellig" alone ;) "Gezelligheid" always needs several people/animals being cozy/happy/etc.
Only sarcasticallly you could be "gezellig" all alone, in that case being the understatement of the year for feeling really lonely and depressed ;) Sometimes when I was fighting with my sister as a kid my parents would say, "jeez, are you guys being "gezellig" again..." (NOT!) ;)

EDIT: ooh, I know something fun, I'll do the same contest in Holland, so you guys can see what pic's come up there in this theme :)

Yeah....that is one of the reasons why I said that gezellig doesn't translate exactly into "cozy" like i've been told so many times... :ds:

Actually, there are lots of words that do not translate correctly. "Gezellig" is one of the ones that is totally subjective, which adds to the confusion. What is 'cozy' to one, may be totally dull to somebody else, but still, that is the description that comes closest. So for the contestants, that is the best guideline to follow.

Eric, I too am bored stiff out of my mind at work today, hence all of my continuous posts on the forum. :g_wink:
Hey, I for one love the idea of each month you posting the Dutch word and meaning for the contest. Can you post the pronounciation as well though? As in, is Gezellig - "j" or "g" sound? I know, I could google it but I would rather get it straight from a Dutchman or woman. :wtg: Thank ya very much.

It doesn't matter....I've worked on it for years and "they" still make fun of me for how I pronounce it. :ds:

Yeah. I have the same problem. (I am from the deep south, where the G's are soft and elegant. No choking sounds here)

And here, in the north, it is the opposit way, we use the ''g'' prononciation. However, we don't like choking on hair, at least I don't.

Tell us about yourself: I live in Metro-West Boston with my husband and our rescued Dutch Shepherd, Minnie. She loves anything involving activity. Our first rescued DS, Kaya, loved to tug. Our second rescued DS (who actually turned out to be a GSDx), Marley, loved to nap. I volunteer for the North American Dutch Shepherd Rescue and am a member of the NADSR BOD.

Thanks! Usually, Marley ends up displacing Kaya from that particular dog bed. She gets up in a huff, but she lets him have it. It's weird because she's typically the boss.
