I think the biggest problem with the DS is expectations. Too many people think if they "socialize" them or train them to not be aggressive, that they can be handled by anyone and approached by strange dogs and live a happy dog park going life. That's not in their nature and they're not Golden Retrievers. I had to learn this too once I got Odin. I came from the land of hunting dogs where everything is expected to hunt in packs and get along with multiple dogs in the field and multiple handlers.

The DS are not bred to be extremely social and no amount of socialization/exposure/training will change that. Owners need to keep them away from certain situations, mange them with new people and new animals, especially in the home, and just be realistic with what the dog is capable of doing. My dogs are crated when company is over. Yes, I could command them in a place command and keep them under obedience control the entire time, but they don't enjoy the company of strangers, especially children, and it's not fair to put them in that environment. These are usually 1 person dogs and they're also herders, so they like to control the situation.

YES YES YES. To many people get these dogs not knowing about them ( not you Texas) and think they can just treat them like any other " family dog " and all will be well. No that is not true.

What you look to do is with training, have them be obedient in social situations, such as walking in town, or at an event where there are lots of other people and dogs. You could put them in a down and they would stay and ignore everything around them and focus on you ONLY.

This is also a great statement and for someone to do this, they must put the dog over themselves, and it seems that many people that come here are hell bent on getting a DS for what ever reason, but they are putting their ego first and not the dog first.

I make a living as a K9 trainer, part of my service is breed selection. I recently was referred a client who wanted a Mal. The woman was married, 3 children, 3 dogs all small breeds of various ages. She is a full time teacher at the elementary level and her husband travels for work part of the week. They recently moved and she wants "protection". I hate to turn down an opportunity to earn a paycheck but, I turned this woman down to help get the dog and train it. I thought her and family would be better served with a Chesapeake Bay or Labrador, buy a handgun, take a gun safety course and learn how to properly use it and store it. Of course the answer was no, I want a Mal because that's the dog that " cornered "OBL" and all the SEALS and Police use them. She went to a breeder who advertises on Craigslist, REALLY, bought a line bred Mal female that was released to her by the breeder at 6 weeks of age. Now could this workout? Of course but, the probability is so slim that I wouldn't take this on for double my fee. I have learned to "JUST SAY NO"

I used to see crap like this when I trained horses, they would come to me and say 'I want this type of horse and I want to do the BIG stuff" and they had no experience. I would say no. but the trainer next door would take them and all of their money and the rider would end up in the hospital, or worse...............

This is what we are talking about, if someone wants something bad enough, they wont take no or and educated answer and will do it anyway. but at least I wont have their blood on my hands. ( or teeth)

I would rather no allpurposek9. Nothing tells me it is a breeder I want to go with. More of a run away feeling to me.
